This isn't a new method but not that common. If the counter batten is felted over then the areas between take the majority of water.
I'm not impressed by the idea though.

It's a flatty, anything other than a proper flat roof finish is a bodge.
Zinc or lead standing seam for example rarely looks out of place IMO.
