This radio is playing up. It’s either unresponsive or toggles through random settings such as the time. The “source” button is not having any effect.

I tried two Makita batteries without any success. I also replaced the AA batteries.

I would welcome any suggestions. Thanks

Randomly flipping through settings, suggests to me that the rotary encoder under the knob is dirty.
Here's a video that shows getting into a similar radio and removing the encoder.
He wrongly calls it a potentiometer - he also says you can only replace it. I would try a spray of contact cleaner first and then exercising it in both directions.

Depending on the version, the source button may have a micro switch underneath, or a conductive rubber contact like a remote control button.
If it's a microswitch, it likely needs replacing. If it's conductive contacts, those can also be gently cleaned up.

Just to add, this definitely isn't a battery issue!

I now have no buttons having any effect. When I remove the battery, it states power failure, even though it has a new set of AA batteries.

Also the main knob seems to feel very sturdy and nothing like the loose one in that video.

This has moved on now...

When I put new AA batteries into the back (with no Makita battery), I get this:

It does initially display "Power Fail" but I didn't manage to catch that in the above image. "Fail" flashes a few times.

Additionally, when I insert a fully charged Makita battery, I get this:

It lights up but no buttons have any effect. I no longer get any random settings whatsoever. It will stay in his state until the Makita battery is drained. I left it overnight.

Is the diagnosis any clearer given its current state or is it time to replace it with something?

Thanks for your help.

Time to replace, the electronics are gone, possibly through damp or immersion in water.

Time to move on...Thanks
It has been in the shed and weather has been pretty cold. Definitely not damp in there. Would the cold have done it? Hope not, as that's where all my tools are kept.

Finally, any recommendations for a new Radio. All my other tools are Makita.

Makita radios seem very high quality as are the other leading makes so it comes down the battery system IMO. Does anybody still listen to a radio on site, in other words is what you really need something that can play your iphone music?

I take your point. I suspect that it's mainly iPhone music with the occasional radio.
