I'm sure that I could kit a child out for school for a year for a lot less than £200.
And, like I said, they should put something away for it from each benefit payment.
At the end of every summer it comes up, many schools no longer allow your uniform from tesco or the local whatevercheapshop like we got it from as kids. And on average now, it costs £200 per kid per Sept on school uniform/sports kit. A lot of schools aren't budging on the rules.

Kids are expensive. Food isn't the only thing that costs.... clothes, school stuff/books, clubs/school trips out, a toy or two on brithdays.. Sorry, I do think you're in denial. And is there much left over each benefit payment? This is the whole thing about poverty.. there isn't anything left over.

Working or not,same is true...
yes, lots of people working are in poverty and cant afford to pay all their bills.

if they get sick -very soon they are homeless, then they find out the toxic nature of Universal credit.

I'm sure there are however, if they used their Child Benefit in the way it is intended, they wouldn't have to do that.
there are many people that dont have enough money to pay their bills -perhaps you can tell me should they prioritise paying rent, heating or feeding themselves.

Why right wing ffs..leave the politics out
it is all about politics -the right wing press.

-Daily Mail and Express feed on hatred: either so called benefit scroungers, immigrants, the EU etc etc -anything to deflect.

There is one nearby so, yes I have.
and have you gone in and talked to the people running it?

do you know every single persons situation going to the foodbank?

I fully agree there are a % of feckless people who really are benefit scroungers.

The problem is, its all too easy to conflate the minority like that and label everyone on benefits.

I hear the argument often that 'theyve all got phones' -well yes -how do you think they might try and get a job otherwise?

Maybe they should try harder, get another job, a better job, move into a house that is cheaper to run, don't have children that you can't afford to bring up, turn the heating down a bit, put another jumper on.
There are hundreds of things they could do to help themselves but, why should they when the state will bail them out.
You won't get any change out of me, I'm one of nine and, if I wasn't there at six when the food was put put on the table I didn't eat until the next meal, I know what it's like to go hungry.
I had to fight for everything I got, nobody gave me any hand outs and you didn't dare ask for them, either.

Some...Possibly...how many...no idea but doubt very much it is huge numbers..Was watching this ""homeless" beggar counting his wad of notes, shortly before lockdown.

He's a blagger then.
The poor parent or parents are not even remotely comparable.

Missing one meal on occasion? Not such a big deal.

Council houses are few and far between these days, private rent is expensive. Zero hours contracts, illness, your employer going bust, changes of circumstances.. all these things can throw someone suddenly into real poverty. Can hardly put the kids back in where they came from now can't afford em :)

I do understand what your saying and there are some real blaggers out there but there are real people with circumstances beyond their control who cannot just get a better job. After covid I think there are going to be many many more people who are going to struggle, losing their jobs, homes etc.

He's promised to feed 3 million people. So, why has this rich man asked the govt. to help him out with his grand plan? Is he funding it? He's got millions for sure.

if I wasn't there at six when the food was put put on the table I didn't eat until the next meal,
some of these people don't have food to put on the table

they don't have any food in the cupboard of fridge.

there are people on universal credit that for some reason or other have had their payments cut or stopped, its not uncommon -they just run out of money totally.

Fruit isn't cheaper than chips, and it goes off, and it's a hot meal. Or chicken nuggets. And you don't have to work to get your kids to eat them.

If this were easy, or simple, it wouldn't be an issue anymore. We'd have sorted it out decades ago. Since we haven't I'm betting it's not simple or easy.

I do agree. My girls are lucky but it's hard sometimes to get them to eat well.

Parents however need to look after themselves as well. Healthy parents is number 1 then anything is possible

Oranges are about 20p and apples considerably cheaper - how much is crisps and pop?

Sounds great that the state is going to prepare and provide a nourishing meal everyday, but is it a long term solution, or will some parents just think, that's one less responsibility we have. And how will affect the obesity problem we have in the UK if we do provide all this extra free food unless people also stop consuming the high calorie junk food.

I think this would be a good time to educate parents.
In the school hall say sit the kids down with their parents and teach them how to find the right food at the right prices. How to prepare and preserve.

Education is the key...
