Not many around.Unless wasting money
there are quite a few around - often due to Universal credit or PIP assessments.

the benefit system is toxic and nasty these days -people get their money stopped for lots of unnecessary reasons.

Are the people going hungry buying fast food and fizzy drinks? You claim they are, some might, but that's doesn't mean all of them are. .
Of course i don't mean "all" may be not even most.

It's a slippery slope, once meals start to be provided to the many that need it, many will jump on the band wagon and some will just see it as another responsibility that they need not bother with, freeing up their money for whatever else they feel like.

That doesn't explain why there were hungry kids in school before the lib dems introduced free school meals.

You just need to look at the queues for food bank to see that they are not going hungry. The queues are littered with fatties wearing mumbling pants and carrying iPhones in their hands with nails like something out of footballers wives. Some of them even turn up in cars. It's not hard to see where their priorities lie.
Besides, is Child Benefit not supposed to be for the benefit of the child?

I can't believe so many people are denying there's a problem with hunger and poverty in the UK.

It's a fairly left Vs right question. Lefties say help people even if someone might abuse the system. The right says help no-one at all.

School meal programs in the United Kingdom can be traced back to the Education (Provision of Meals) Act 1906.

In 1944, the United Kingdom required local authorities to provide school dinners that were consistent with legal nutritional requirements. The government paid the full cost of school meals in 1947.[5] Free school meals were available to children with families on very low incomes.[40] As a result, from the 1950s onward, staple traditional "school dinner" foods became embedded in the national psyche. "School puddings" in particular refers to desserts historically served with school dinners in state and private schools. Examples include tarts such as gypsy tart and Manchester tart, and hot puddings such as spotted dick and treacle sponge pudding.

In the 1980s, Margaret Thatcher's Conservative government ended entitlement to free meals for thousands of children, and obliged local authorities to open up provision of school meals to competitive tender. This was intended to reduce the cost of school meals provided by local authorities. However, it caused a substantial decrease in the standard of school food.[citation needed] A 1999 survey by the Medical Research Council suggested that despite rationing, children in 1950 had healthier diets than their counterparts in the 1990s, with more nutrients and less fat and sugar.[42]

This became a major topic of debate in 2004, when chef Jamie Oliver spearheaded a campaign to improve the quality of school meals. At this time, school dinners at state schools were normally made by outside caterers. The schools sold a lot of deep-fried fast food, like chips, fried turkey nuggets, pizza, and pies. After the "Jamie's School Dinners" programme was shown on Channel 4, sections of the public showed support for increased school meal funding, causing the government to create the School Food Trust. This topic became a factor in the 2005 UK general election.[43]

Martha Payne's blog NeverSeconds, which discussed the quality of school meals at her primary school in Lochgilphead, made national headlines after gaining support from Jamie Oliver.[44]

Schools employed cooks etc. I dug it out as I am sure some had free meals when I was at school. Teachers kept quiet about who did to avoid embarrassing them. Some also paid for them as it was a cheaper option. Then there is free daily milk. Not sure what happened with that but a method of making sure kids go enough calcium.

Thatcherism is still about.

I wasn't keen on my school meals. First one was like this. Meat, gravy veg, with a dose of baked beans in tomato source. Never ever ate anything like that before so for a while bough things with the money and walked around lunch time eating them. The school found out after couple of weeks and promised to never serve baked beans with gravy again. ;) This was when I was 5.

and as usual I sit somewhere between those extremes.

very much so.

We most certainly need a system to help those in need, but not convinced the current system does that well - I also wonder how many who are really need of help are too proud to ever ask for it, and that would be a sad state of affairs.
