Nadhim Zahawi?

He invested in a commercial riding school within the grounds of his country estate (what he called a "cottage")

I agree it is not normal to provide heating for horses.

More likely heating for the office, lads' tea shed, and live-in staff accomodation. Though in the interview he claimed it was an electric meter in the riding school. See vid in post #39, about 1 minute in.

Apparently he claimed £5,822.27 for energy bills. Clearly the taxpayer is over-generous to MPs.

Perhaps he thought this story would get him sympathy from soft-headed animal lovers like mottie.

Any competent householder or accountant would separate out household expenses and business expenses.

He is a trustworthy as Johnson.

I agree it is not normal to provide heating for horses so perhaps he has massaged the truth.

Can't discount the possibility that he is telling the truth this time, but I think it improbable.

He has a riding school on his land, a commercial business, the power is fed from his house. The 'stables' had a separate meter but he received one electricity bill. There was a tack room with a heater for drying out equipment and no doubt staff accommodation (if any) had heating. The story was was well covered by The Mirror who are anti Tory, fair enough, but as you well know after a bit of googling he wasn't claiming for keeping horses warm.

It was wrong, we know that, but no need to tell lies John.

I thought you'd learned your lesson after claiming that 'no nation with nuclear weapons has ever been invaded' on the Ukraine thread.

I suppose this isn't a good time to enquire how the moderator approval on my name change is going?, it's been a while now.

On a related issue, at about 16 minutes on this other video (after ripping Zahawi's story)

Is a mention of a measure to reduce tax fraud, and Rees-Mogg's part in it.

Zahawi himself said in a statement "On investigation I have discovered that the electricity supply for a mobile home located in the stable yard and for the stables themselves was linked to my house."

I am quite willing to believe that his statement was misleading or untrue.

It is interesting to note that his expenses claim came to light when an investigation revealed that 340 MPs, including Government ministers, had reclaimed almost £200,000 in one year on energy bills for their second homes. Mr Zahawi’s claim was the highest.

I don’t think JohnD likes millionaires very much. Unless they are Labour millionaires.……

How foolish you are not to recognise that it is tax-dodgers I disapprove of, as I have frequently expressed.

Perhaps all the tax dodgers you know are millionaires.

What’s your definition of a 'tax dodger' then? I asked you before whether you 'dodged' tax on the first £2k of the dividend payments you claimed to have had on your investments. Does that make you a 'tax dodger' as well?

Since when have horses needed heaters, a bed of straw and maybe a rug over their back, maybe.

Blup

These have a swimming pool & spa

Seems it boils down to him saying that he didn't own the shares, so he could get the money tax free via his non-dom father.

Careless my arse.

He tried to "avoid" tax rather than "evade" tax. The fact that he failed abysmally in this is the point !

This tax bill could very easily have been "avoided". He is guilty of failing to do something which should have been easily accomplished.

It's nearly half past ten.

PMQs starts at noon.

Has he resigned yet?

Which is a full 12 hours after I asked you a question for the second time and you ignored it. What would you think of Zahawi if he used the same tactics?

Here’s the question again in case you missed it twice.
