New Front Door Gone Wrong

Difficult to see from photo above however the top of the door itself is slightly lower on the left hand side. However it is plumb with the spirit level horizontally. I think that suggests that the whole frame is off plumb, correct?

So when the door is refitted the frame on the hinge side (in blue) needs packing upwards, this will close the gap up along the top of the door on the opposite side, viewed from the outside the left side will go up which is what you're desiring.

Back to inside, the door needs shifting to the right(in orange), gap on right is too wide and the left is none existent

Am I correct to insist that the door, frame and top/side panels are all showing straight with a spirit level, no matter whether the canopy/opening of my building is slightly off?

I seem to have taken from this forum that their installation should be straight.

The company are fairly aggressive in their comms and keep going on about the canopy and pillars of my property not being straight. The fitter said this morning that he thinks it is “madness” to refit here. But the owner of the firm has agreed to do it.

Of course I understand the final “look” will never be perfect given the old building being off plumb etc which is ok with me. But as it is, my canopy goes one way and the door frame goes the other way.

Unless I'm missing something, the work for which they are responsible is either within acceptable levels of being plumb and level or it's not. The fact they're (albeit reluctantly) agreeing to a refit suggests they're not 100% confident in the current installation.

To me, what they should do given the history of this, is complete the reinstallation and then show you, the customer, that the door and surrounding panels are level and plumb. Their concern shouldn't be surrounding aspects of the building that might be out of level/plumb that they can do nothing about.

Thank you very much to everyone for the sound advice and comments.

Update on this: I asked for an explanation in the various issues and highlighted some chips / scratches in the door. (Pics here)

The company have asked if I’d like cancel the work (I haven’t paid anything up front) and start again with another supplier, to which I have agreed. As disruptive as it is, I think I’ll bite the bullet and if I need to pay more for a better door & installation then so be it.

Does anyone recommend any composite door brands and what would be the best quality?

cheers

My personal opinion is that you should try to find a local independent window company with a good reputation in the local area. They will have a reputation to protect and employ their own fitters rather than using random subbies. When you find this company they will be able to recommend the products that they know are good quality and they use regularly.
