Today I will check on solar before turning on dish washer, washing machine, or tumble drier so I see this
quite often, also the software logs under and over voltage, however before solar installed, rare to measure the voltage, and a faulty PEN could go unnoticed or years.
Complete loss OK one would see the effect, but a poor connection not so sure.
As to line - neutral reversal so easy to do, had a few boxes of sockets to fit, line on left for most, but line was on right for one odd box, lucky I did test, so found mistake, but so easy to get wrong with a repetitive job.
I know I have an earth rod, but as to testing, not easy, I don't even know how my installation should be tested, I know with loss of grid supply the inverter connects earth to neutral, and should disconnect earth and neutral when the grid supply returns, but I did not install my own solar so never looked at how to test.
As to automatic disconnection of supply, again not sure how it works, will the inverter auto disconnect? There is no consumer unit between the inverter and points of use, one FCU and four sockets only supplied with the UPS.
However the thread is about what SELV means, if the S stands for safety, then yes there may be an earth, but if S stands for separated, then clearly no earth. I have not had a hard wired door bell in years, but that was always the system which was quoted when talking about earthing extra low voltage systems, as the cables run for such a distance, and could be close to low voltage cables.
Some times surface, but when buried we simply have no clue where they run. I know with parents the door bell was altered, social services were in charge, there had been a problem with door not being answered due to flat batteries, so the bell was to be mains powered, they could not find a stand alone DC power supply, so a walmart type fitted, and a 13 amp socket for it to plug into.
I asked in vain for the minor works certificate, I was suspicious, the RCD tester failed to trip the RCD when plugged into that socket, so seemed likely connected to non RCD side of the consumer unit. It was also in a convenient place to be used to charge the mobility scooter, which defeated the whole idea of not loosing the door bell power. And the area had so many odd wires, found the guy who installed the consumer unit, had used the GPO earth fitted for the party line phone, around 1 mm² bare copper around outside of house.
In other words a whole menagerie of errors, in the end got a full rewire, but with old installs common to find these errors, so is not earthing one leg of an ELV supply safe?
2004 with Part P we started to see installation and minor works certificates, but before then, domestic electricians did not seem to know what they were. And I know I would write some thing like EBADS for earthing system, without really even working out what it stud for, I had been told that should be put on the certificate, and I just did as I was told.
