Opportunity for Input

Funny that no one has expressed any views on the plastic cased combustion chambers yet !!!

My main concerns with halsteads are:-

Control panel and knobs look VERY cheap!

Spares are very expensive!

Connecting up to the back of some models was very uncomfortable!

PCB reliability was very poor on some older models.

Metal case components look very utilitarian and lack any proper hinge/restraint facilities for commissioning and maintenance.

Profiles yes..and primas best boilers ever. but netaheats (deathtraps) and solos ( i dont know these :D ) never!

If i had to have an old school boiler it would be a flamingo!

the neatheat was marvellous just had to change the seal every year :)

easy to change stuff and the parts (were) cheap

the flamingo was lovely :)

also the Ideal e type was great

I think the best thing about these old boilers was their simpilicty

I suppose all that was before manufacturers cottoned on to the fact that they could make their profits through the supply of spare parts. This logically leads to keenly priced boilers to get market share (since profit need not be generated at this stage) but an incentive for a fair degree of built-in unreliability in the components (which must then be unique to each manufacturer to avoid generic spares competing).

All this leads to boilers having shorter working lives and being replaced more frequently. This might be more acceptable if flueing systems and pipework connections were all standardised so that boilers could be changed quickly and attached to existing flues. Personally I find this trend rather depressing - boilers ought to come with much longer guarantees to encourage the manufacturers to build reliable boilers.

Very well put chris

I must I hate coming to a boiler that we have installed two or threes previously and telling the client they need to pay for a part now

its embrassing

I have found their tech support line quite good, but otherwise have the same gripes as the others.
You remove the bottom panel to work on a Finest and everything has to hang on the wires  etc.

Eden needs a normal-cost plume diverter kit.

Agree CM. I had this problem with the Micron/Suprima PCB debacle.

we had BIG time with responses

fitted a load of halstads years ago, still eched in my mind never fit again and have maintained that thought ever since.but as you have asked for views i would like to see a easy to fit/work/service appliance, price has to be competive.spares need to be reasonable, not that you would need too many
technical and back up need to be that not a spotty youth/woman reading the fault finding chart just telling you what to do
last but not least it has to be reliable and able to withstand uk sys quirks
open vented, pump on the return tolerant on gas pipe sizes etc.
now see if you can manage that

Maybe this thread's a spoof?

Maybe I'll post one apparently from Ideal, to see if we can crash the internet...
