Panorama - The Smart Meter mess

A bit OTT, don't you think?
Granted you can assert it's a bit of a conspiracy theory-esque view, however I'd assert not an impossible one. I'll repeat, the more 'connected' our cars are (and let's face it, cars are increasingly becoming mobile devices) the more options available to control them centrally. Not the same thing but a bit like cars coming loaded with kit, however the end user, oops sorry driver, can't access the kit unless they pay a monthly subscription for it e.g. heated seats.

I think it's perfectly reasonable to assert in the future the country could be mapped into 'smart boundary zones' with the ability to control whether or not vehicles can enter.

Do you not think, that we already have that?

You can run, but you cannot hide, so why worry about it? If the tech really concerns you, then all you can do is go live on a remote Scottish island, alone, with no phone, no bills, none of the modern facilities of life. Me, I'm happy to accept all that modern life offers, including a worthwhile discount on my energy bills..

Oh for goodness sake, NO, we don't already have that. You are evidently completely missing my point.

No, you are being stupidly, and massively suspicious, believing all the ridiculous conspiracy theories, even promoting them. If your not unhappy paying a little more on all your bills, then you carry on..

Just so you know, most main roads, include ANPR cameras, the cameras track you where ever you might go, there is no way you can possibly avoid it, apart from not driving on the road at all.

lol, STILL you miss my point.

As of today, what % of vehicles on the road can be centrally/remotely stopped from going county to county?

My point is that IN THE FUTURE it's possible this sort of control will be possible and might indeed be implemented in certain scenarios.

Nothing to do with ANPR and current tracking capabilities.

As for the original topic, the potential downsides of having a 'smart' meter far outweigh the potential upside of me saving £3.42 a month on my bills ;)

I've deliberately ignored your silly nonsense, about restrictions areas, because that can be applied to absolutely any vehicles, at any time, and already is being applied, but the potential sm savings to be had, are considerably more than the sum you mentioned. There are no downsides to smart meters, over and above the downside of meters generally - that you have to pay for your consumption.

Can it? tbh I didn't realise.

So how can they remotely stop my 2008 non 'smart' car from driving into adjoining counties? I'm intrigued because I genuinely didn't know my 2008 car can be controlled in such a manner. Please tell me more.

If they can deny access for a smart vehicle, they can equally easily deny access for your 2008 vehicle. If they can charge vehicles for entering certain zones of the UK, they can equally easily ban them completely - ANY RANGE OF VEHICLES AT ALL, from any area they might choose.

lol, still you miss my point. Let's leave it there ...

How useful, is old consumption information, to anyone? Answer = of no practical use to anyone, except the supplier, and perhaps the customer.
The supplier benefits, and with the advent of SM's they get real time data - much more useful...

Because it will end up with individual time based billing based on what is best for the supplier, not the consumer...

As for getting better deals, do people still not understand for example that the 'deals' you usually get with a 'loyalty' card are the true price and those without a card are paying a hiked up price?

Same thinking with the energy suppliers!

It will? When? Or do you mean they will roll out economy 7 type offers, whereby discounts are offered to folk using off-peak leccy?
