Panorama - The Smart Meter mess

You're telling us that millions have the heating on in August ? Ok
I'm telling you it's not unusual but then again your the one who worked in hundreds
of houses on heating systems in the summer months tens of thousands over the decades and done warrant runs for a couple of decades . What would I know..... and yep I have seen countless genuine cases . But if your happy paying hundreds ontop of your bills for smart meter role out and debt provisions who am I to burst your bubble

Some of the wording is sneaky (cards/letters through the post from suppliers) re implying households NEED to have a smart meter installed when this isn't the case. Not to be ageist however I think of an old biddy who's been getting on fine with her 'old fashioned' meter and submitting monthly readings. Then she thinks 'oh I need to do this' which is fine if there are no issues ...

No

It's just that i think the debt problem is a bit bigger than a FEW having the heating on in August.

But if you know it's that simple, the debt problem could be easily sorted

i constantly get asked to install a smart meter , and they say they have to ask every 6mths as part of the regulation
I was also offered with the smart meter and fantastic new fixed tarrif , and quoted a price and saving - which would save me over £1000 a year based on estimates

NOW i have a spreadsheet , that works everything out - monthly or more when the cap changes and rates change

based on there estimated years consumption , I calculated based on oct price increase tarrif v fixed smart meter tarrif - would have save £15 for the year ....
and on my figures , the consumpton estimates were way out - more so then on the actual bill estimates for annual consumption.

I know what i consum and I know when i have things on , we dont leave items in standby anymore and keep our costs down to a minimum any way

i will put off a smart meter until its the LAW and i legally have to change
Not leaving things on, and using only what you need, I don't understand how any new meter could actually save you more than pennies, if that.

I'm the same. Utility bills are sensible (compared to what other people I know, pay) and I use electricity and gas AS I NEED.

I don't see how any meter can make any difference. But I agree it could, to people who use power without any thought.

We've got the old white meter dual tariff and our supplier told us we had to have a smart meter as the signal was being switched off at the end of July this year...
Yep I have letters like that and I get the phone calls. I had an economy 7 fitted years ago but since changed my tariff to a single and just send in the two readings. They try to make it sound like it HAS to be changed, when they ring I just say I dont want want one.

And point out to me where I said the millions in debt problem was down to it not being unusual for people to have their heating on in August stop making things up in your head ..

You do however, lack access to the many Smart tariffs..
Like those that give you free electricity for not using your lecky between x and y o-clock. I listened to a phone in radio and people were per filling the kettle and boiling it, charging all the phones back up to 100% -cooking dinner early charging up batteries for torches then after all of that and wandering around in the dark for a few hours they received £1.78 AND wasted all that electricity "prepping" - its a complete joke.
The real reason is control via pricing it wouldn't surprise me if starzi starmer mandates it by law you have to have one, once enough people are on them the real control will start.

I see you are wearing your Terminally Retarded cap again today.

Does the Supplier need a court Order to disconnect the supply on a Smart meter = No
Does the Supplier need a court Order to disconnect the supply on an old meter inside the property = Yes.

Which has the independent scrutiny of a magistrate?
Answer - not a household with a smart meter

Same applies to forced switching to pre-pay.
Irrelevant waffle..
Disconnection protocols are exactly the same for both meters.

Q. Am I more likely to be disconnected having a SM?
A. No.

Must admit I had about 3 or 4 customers who were very elderly and anything short of a heatwave, the heating would be on. I'd be opening doors and windows to cool off only to find they'd shut them 10 minutes later.

The last two pages tell a different story.

You really do enjoy wearing that cap.

Nonsense.
You are no more likely to be disconnected with either meter.
Of course you are - if you have the meter inside and you dont let them in for a start. But with a SM it makes no difference if you let them in or not. ergo you are more likely to be disconnected on a SM.
