They did (have to abide by the rules) prior to 2023. It's just that unscrupulous debt collectors took it upon themselves to bypass the rules, gain warrants and run roughshod over those in debt. It's why there so many home entries and analogue meters, wrongly switched to pre-pay.

Quite the opposite. I've been very vocal in the admission that they are simply a meter to me. It's others that have been bigging up their capabilities, like yourself for instance.
The only benefit to me (when it works) is that it sends readings back to the supplier. Other than that, it's just a meter.
You are no more likely to be switched to pre-pay or have your supply cut off with either a SM or an analogue meter. FACT.

Not at all. I've read the letter which outlines concerns over SM switching. I've also noted the date. It was authored about the same time 350'000 warrants were issued by the courts to debt agency workers, in their efforts to replace analogue meters with pre-pay meters.
Just how many SM's were wrongly switched MBK?

i visit a place now and again where the smart meter works perfectly. Can even set how many readings a day are taken. 5g ok there - others flaky.
Here mine doesn't. Strange as it should be using the mobile network. No problems with that on a mobile.
Reason for fitting them - easy - no need for meter readers. Probably better estimations on bills as well.
Meter readers still required just not near as many in theory every gas meter should be visibly inspected every 2 years for various reasons . But not happening as it should
Yes, but that was a fixed window of cheap power, which no suits, or is even the best way to do things. Now we can include variable times and rates, in the system.

I agree, the SM's could have been much better, much more effective, had they only allowed use of the Internet for reporting home, but it is what it is - a system which records consumption, averaged over 30 minutes sessions, stored, then transmitted to base, at the days end. That doesn't compare well, with my unofficial system, which reports consumption, on the fly, every few seconds.
My take from offgen is that they requested a halt in switching people to prepay. They then added some considerations to be checked before switching. So suppliers then announced that they will fit them if needed. I assume after the checks have been made.
There has also been changes to what should happen if people get behind on their fuel bills.
I agree with that 100%. Total consumption depends one what people choose to buy and power up.
One thing I noticed about the house I visit where the SM works is a different style of meter and attachment that comes with it. Also no gas. I need gas and electric here but the gas meter is ~8ft from the electrics.
