I think what we see is a middle aged man who grew up in a period where 'coming out' was much more difficult.

I believe its not uncommon in that age group, less so with younger generations.

Because if he didn't the tabloids would have published first - the news had got out, it's about damage control. Better to run the story yourself rather than defend against the lies the tabloids will quickly spread to get better ratings.

One thing about Phillip Schofield's announcement that I can’t understand. If he hasn’t had a gay relationship and isn’t planning one, why did he feel the need to tell everyone?

Phil Schofield announcing that he is coming out of the cupboard is hardly a monumental moment of history. He is no great heroic spokesman or martyr; he is a calculating little twerp and is obviously doing it for the money. He is the sort who'd sell his own grandmother - look at what he endorses: We Buy Any Car. There is big money in being a mattress muncher nowadays, the work will be pouring in; adverts, game shows, reality shows etc - they are all full of uphill gardeners. Expect to see a whole lot more of him from now on; documentaries, interviews, newspaper exclusives. Then, when the novelty wears off and his star starts to fade, he will announce that he is black.
