Well its that time again folks!

Breif history:

Extention / loft conversion to a bungalow. Original sparkie went AWOL. He had replaced the consumer unit, but left this under the floorboards below the consumer unit / intake.

The 1.5mm² SWA feeds a fairly well loaded 6 way CU in the garage. The joint box is fed in 2.5mm² fed from the 32A socket MCB. The armouring is no longer earthed either.

He left a huge list of other problems, but this was the most shocking.

You say he went AWOL - perhaps this was temporary as he had run out of galv boxes that day? (Still no excuse leaving this live though)

And I dont see the need to cut the wires from the fuses like that - having to re-strip all those cores (unless this was a full rewire job)

Have a look at my topic in electrics outside of UK.

Any other "good" pics from that spark's work?

WOW!!

Perhaps I'm being naive but I'm amazed people do stuff like that.

What was the approximate load on the 1.5mm SWA?

The load was not massive. A couple of lights and 6 or 8 twin sockets, but not much used in there at the moment.

This is planned to be a workshop in the future though.

Hypothetically, if there was a fault on the cable with say 20A running through it. Would it actually catch fire without the MCB tripping?

Depending on the load on the rest of the ring, yes.

If most of the appliances in the house were off then >30A could flow in the cable without the MCB tripping.

It would have to be a L-N fault as the cable was RCD protected.

I guess the gland at the other end was not in contact with the cpc?

Can I?

No you can't

Don't know TBH, as I am putting in a new 6.0mm² feed to the garage, and rewiring it. I haven't really had a proper look yet, but I expect there may be more photos to follow.

The SWA is glanged straight into in insulated CU so I suspect the armour is not connected at that end either
