There does seem to be evidence that it occurred naturally, such as a virus very similar to SARS-CoV-2 being found in bats and the fact that the jump from animals to humans has happened before.

I heard (part of) a programme on the radio last week where somene was talking about the bats in Laos

Disclaimer 2: I (probably) therefore missed the explanation of the terms they were using, and as virology etc isnt one of my fields of expertise I couldnt completely follow what they were saying.
But as far as I could gather it looks like the virus circulates in bats but is harmless to them. And the really interesting thing is they think (but need to confirm with antibody testing in the local population) that it has also been circulating in humans for some time, without being harmful. And then it mutated. Just like the way the variants weve seen since the pandemic started have shown increased transmissibility, increased virulence, or reduced effectiveness of vaccines against them, the whole thing was started by a variation which was harmful whereas prior to that it had not been.
