Power cuts by the weekend ?

And this too, sounds like its been a policy over recent years. Who made the national policy?

The UK has some of the lowest levels of gas storage in Europe at 12 days average or 7.5 peak winter days, compared to Germany at 89 days, France at 103 days and the Netherlands at 123 days

I think we keep the liquid gas ships off the coast and use them as the storage, buying gas from USA - who blew up the Nord stream pipeline. You gotta give it to those yanks !

If my maths is right, each large tanker can store the equivalent of 100 million cubic metres of natural gas.

I think you have to digest what they are saying. It sounds like it's about 20% worse than last year. Rather than, we will run out by the weekend. The role of storage is to smooth out the peaks and troughs.

Centrica have been lobbying for funding to maintain Rough for a long time.. Maybe this is some of that.

That Centrica press release seems to contain exactly the same information contained in all the news reports. In fact, I think this is where the news agencies got their information in the first place.

Centrica seem to have been in a stand off with the government for almost a decade about who pays for gas storage, and it looks like they are turning up the heat. At one point they threatened to close down the main storage facility. The press release says they want a "cap and floor" funding mechanism before they will invest and expand storage. You might know what that means?

Sure,

its just like a home using cheap electricity to charge a power wall at night to use the electricity during the day.

If Energy storage investment is to be encouraged, then those who build the facilities need to be able to buy cheaper and sell higher. What they don't want to be stung with, is an obligation to refill the storage when the energy price is high and therefore not be able to make money when they release it at a lower price.

In effect, Centrica are driving around on a 1/2 tank of petrol, because all the pumps are expensive and they expect the price of petrol to drop next week.

The cap and floor gives them the power to refill, when the price isn't great safe (capped) in the knowledge that they can release (sell) with a minimum (floor).

This story is mostly about the cost of gas, rather than the ability to store it. Our need to store gas, will decline over time
