You seem to agree with everything the government does!
While burning huge amounts of the dirtiest coal, as they clsoed many of their nuclear plants.

I suspect that 'we' (the majority of the population) would choose to invest in tidal etc...
But governments and those that fund them/vested interests think otherwise!
And to state the bleeding obvious yet again, governments have no money to invest - it is our money!
People need to stick together to force change.
I quite like the idea of the 'don't pay your energy bill' movement doing the rounds at the moment...
But it will never work, as it would require everyone to do the same thing.
We are wedded to 'divide and rule' tactics, and the system is set up in such a way that only a very few don't have to worry about 'too much to lose'!
Thus I am also guilty of succumbing to the above!
One wonders what the trigger will be to change the herd mindset, and when it will happen?

No a far better idea of the reasoning than you appear to have. Actually the various iideas have to attract investment from various sources of money - the gov not being one of them but they may put some in. The bulk comes from elsewhere - they want a return on what they invest.
They stopped burning that type of coal a long time ago. True - there route to renewables does appear to be more difficult but on the other hand the 60 or more year commitment nuke needs does have it's off putting aspects. I see it as an interesting excuse. The main reason is the population voting no nuke. The Japanese explosion made that certain.
They still burn it, and even demolished a village(s) to dig up more:

Already been done. It's called the E-Cat, invented by Andrea Rossi. Basically a mini cold fusion generator about the size of a CH boiler. Endless cheap energy with no pollution. Rossi has been bringing it to market 'next year' for about 25 years now. Can't wait.
The latest change to nuke stations is more internal containment to restrict spread if and when they go wrong. Sadly they can.
German coal - they have been importing cleaner stuff from Russia. Same could be obtained from China - lower cost at our docks than from our pit heads. From the same link
Germany is moving forward with its coal phaseout. Last week, the Cabinet approved a package of draft legislation that would accelerate the expansion of renewable energy. Under that bill, renewable energy would generate 80 percent of the country’s power mix by 2030, double what it is currently.
Given other more recent changes I'd say they will be meeting that - no choice. In the mean time the ecconomy has to run just like elsewhere including us. In some ways the major producers are more of a problem but the lower level ones also stack up and in many cases are also importing which shifts the co2 production elsewhere. This makes some of the web info about on the subject total garbage. Eg Buy any euro car and you are passing the problem on to them. The same applies to a whole host of things and is generally totally ignored by greens - they would rather nit pick other countries. Stop buying the stuff and what the hell do you think would happen.
What we need is a large number of conceited, condescending, imperious, pontifical, arrogant, (self) opinionated, self-important yet insignificant and anonymous members on Internet forums chip, chip, chipping away at the government and perhaps sometime in the next hundred years or so there might be enough of them to hold their political party conference in a telephone box. At least you’ve made a start.

There are many who say we (collectively) will need to do such things (burn fossil fuels) to plug the gap, and invest at an accelerated rate into low carbon technology in the coming decades, far more than planned, owing to the war. Not good for the economy, as the cost is going to be huge.
When I say low carbon tech, I don't just mean wind/solar, but also nuclear, hydrogen (for things like steel), low carbon concrete etc.
