Rate this Job! - Cooker Hood / Extractor Install

Did it fit snugly?

So - you never got up there to clean it.

Is it the same electrician or not?

If it is, have it out with him.

I cannot comment on whether the circuit was satisfactory or not without knowing the details.

The new install looks fine.
In twenty years it might be filthy and falling to pieces.

Canopy hood inside a box - sealed on all sides. Why would I think to to clean inside it?

It's not the same electrician. The canopy hood installer was not the same trades person that build the kitchen extension or the conservatory. Two separate trades persons - two separate problems, if this third trades person is correct.

I think you probably have too much faith in 'sealing'. In my experience, everything in a kitchen eventually gets filfthy and greasy if it is not fairly regularly cleaned - and you-know-who's Law being what it is, it's often the least easily accessible places that get the filthiest, if neglected.

Kind Regards, John

Lesson Learned. I was 18 when the original was fitted.

OP. When you say you had 'fully qualified tradesmen' in, did you ask to see, check the validity and note the details of their 'qualifications’?

Its was a full fitted kitchen - mfi etc. and the like. We bought - they fit - beginning to end.

They sent the installer.

So no then?

Be reasonable. If you went to a mainstream high street kitchen retailer that design and fully fit the kitchen - would you go through - each of their workers qualifications and experience as they walk through the door - one by one?

Be reasonable.

The op is asking if we see a problem with this install.

He obviously feels he has had his fingers burnt by the previous install, which was done by what should have been qualified tradesman (Maybe some of his own fault or undermaintained, I'm not saying either way or accusing).

Had an electrician in to fit an electrical appliance. Seems sensible to me, maybe the electrician did above an beyond a sparks usual remit (sparks choice).

I don't see any issue with what has been done I'd be happy with that in my house, I would of possibly shortened the cable rather than coiled and zip ties.

I will say I'm not a spark my self but consider that a have more of an idea than your general DIY enthusiast (I'm not here to explain my history).

I don't see why he is getting flack for being possibly a tad over cautious

No.

I would assume that no mainstream high street kitchen retailer that designs and fully fits kitchens would use anything other than the cheapest knuckle-draggers it could find.

It certainly would be if there were electrical work to be done. However, the the only thing which seems certain is that the electrician plugged the appliance into a socket which had been there for 20 years - and it's not clear (at least, not to me, what, if any, further electrical work the electrician did.

I think the real problem is that the OP came here with a pile of photos expecting/wanting people to tell him that the work which had been done was unacceptable, and became rather unhappy and argumentative when the responses he got were not really what he wanted to hear.

Kind Regards, John

post 27, appears he fitted a new socket front and box and a gland, he further explained the old box and socket, i assume was in the same location, was also full of grease somehow..
As too why he enlarged and fitted a 6 inch pipe when the fan seems to have a 4 inch outlet I dont know
.
Personally i would have gone back entry into the box or glanded in the bottom, using the box to cover some of the damage.
Filling the rest around the socket with decoraters filler to look a bit neater, regardlesss of whos job it is.

Yes, I saw that. In fact, he had said the same thing previously in post #22. However, that appears to be the one part of the work done that the OP is not criticising or concerned about (once he was reassured about the stuffing gland)! - and, although (as you say) others may have done it differently, I don't think any of us really have any problems with that work (on the basis of what we can see), either.

Unless there is more we don't know about, it therefore seems that all the complaints/concerns the OP may have about what the electrician did presumably must relate to non-electrical work.

Yes, I wondered that - maybe the answer is in the other thread. If it had been a very long duct run, I suppose there might conceivably have been some point, but the photos seem to indicate that it just 'goes through the wall' - in which case I can't for the life of me imagine what benefit it could confer!

Kind Regards, John
