I suppose if someone had the time and was interested enough, the pledges made by politicians during elections could be mapped against how many actually came to fruition. Say over the past 50 years. I think it would make for interesting reading and suspect the number of pledges seen through would be minimal.
However, a bit like the referendum mantra of the SNP, if politicians were challenged on this we'd just get a load of political speak/waffle e.g. material changes to the sociopolitical landscape after the election necessitated a change in direction.
The UK armed forces are a division of the USA's when they want it, parts of it or some particular service. There has been various theories why this is the case.
This is essentially why Blare got involved with Sadam and at the time the then leader of the Tories agreed whole heartedly despite what NATO thought.
Later there were moans that the UK didn't get their fair share of rebuilding work. Probably didn't use as many big enough bombs. Cruise missiles are very good at creating the need construct work especially when all utilities are wiped out. Embargoes are also very good at making leaders extremely unpopular especially if the population has to queue for things and suffers. That is what is attempted to be done to Iran at the moment. As the USD is the global currency they find it very easy to do this sort of thing.
I have extreme doubts that Russia has any interest what so ever about getting it's satellite states back. They disposed of them because they could no longer afford them and like all adopted a different form of communism that bears no relationship to what it used to be. Not sure what it would be called these days. Same with China and others.
