Hi all

I’m about to move house and am exploring the options of taking my car charger with me.

When my charger was installed the company used insulation piercing connectors to feed off the tails going to the consumer unit. Having spoke to an electrician about having the connectors removed and they have said about repairing the insulation by either liquid insulation and then heatshirk or 2 layers of heat shrink to give double insulation.

Will this comply to wiring regulations?

Cheers

Could you post a photo - that sounds an unusual way to connect additional cables and load ?

Yeah it isn’t the way I would have done it and it’s not the way it will be done in the new house!

Those line taps should not have been used there (see above) and while the tails ought to be replaced, if I was disconnecting the EVSE, I'd try not to get too involved in sorting out existing ****. Id just take the outgoing feed out that small board and leave it as is, if you need the double module RCBO (that I'm guessing is in there) for wherever its going next then as there is a DP isolator upstream, just bang a 100A switch disconnector in there instead.

I'd certainly not worry about trying to take a 2mod enclosure with holes already drilled for re-use.

That shouldn’t be done in any installation imho ....... Shocking
Indeed - but according to Wiring Matters article to which pcaouolte brought our attention, it is apparently an increasingly common practice of EV charging point installers - so, as you say, shocking!

What's stopping someone using these before the meter....bit of free electric as long as you wear your marigolds.

You leave a lot of evidence ? Do it round the back though
still leaves lots of evidence on the front.

If you really do want to take the 2 module enclosure I estimate there is enough cable after the damage to terminate into the top of the isolator, possibly a bit tight.

Why? You'll still be paying a spark to install it so all you're gaining is not having to buy 600 quids worth of charger and accessories. Then when your buyer learns you're taking the charger that they can clearly see in the rightmove photos and were drawn to because they also have an EV, they'll lower their offer so you're effectively paying for a new charger for them..

I'm not sure it it is anymore? I think about 3/4 years that would have been true, someone had discovered them, thought "Thats neat" and a few electrician influencer types started using them, and then it spread. But very quickly it was pointed out that they were not suitable and that seemed to spread around as quickly, no doubt fueled by a few people who tried to show such jobs at NICEIC assessments and had to arrange to put it right. I don't doubt that there are probably some folk out there still mis-using them, but I think to call it an increasingly common practice in 2025 is wrong.

It was briefly, then common sense pervailed, but there is probably a reasonable size base of installed non compliant jobs which were never corrected when the installers beacme aware of their errors.
