skitzee,
The thing about your posts that I dislike is your tarring with the same brush a lot of decent people unemployed through no fault of their own.
Tone down your vitriol and you might gain some respect.
Just because I give support to certain unemployed people does not mean that I condone out and out abusers of the welfare system.
I count my blessings that I have always been able to work and keep myself, something a lot of people dont have the benefit of.

Again...I have no idea who's posts your reading but they obviously aren't mine. Like I have said for the last 4 posts now. I have no problem people using the system as a safety net. Only have issues when it is a career choice.

Stop trying to put words in my mouth.

Find something else to post about you are getting like an old gramaphone record, I thought you were supposed to be working during the day? you seem to spend a lot of time posting on the group.
PS, what is your job?

typical response of someone who doesn't want to admit they were misquoting someone. I am working right now actually. Standing in line at the bank....oh and NOYFB .

skitzee,
Dont think you and I will ever see eye to eye do you agree to disagree and call a truce with no hard feelings either way??

Someone wrote in our local paper last week about her 50+ yr old son. He had been made redundant over 18 months ago. He'd had 3 job interviews in that time , although he was applying for 3-5 jobs per week. He eventually reached the situation where the jobcentre offered him a work trial (which he had to take or lose benefits) The employer kept him on this for 2 weeks then said they didn't have any positions available. He'd actually worked some overtime too and the employer told him they didn't have to pay him for the overtime too. .
For my sins, I was made redundant late last November. Since then I too have been applying for 3 + jobs every week. Result?? I had my 4th job interview last week. I'm 54 now and it seems prospective employers are always looking for the younger person.
I'm currently receiving £31.20p per week UB, simply because my partner is disabled and receives a very small pension from her late husband's employer.
If it were not for her contribution to household bills etc, I'd have probably starved by now. .
A joiner by trade, the jobcentre have expected me to look at ALL jobs they have, even if I don't have the necessary qualifications for that position. the other week the advisor asked (told) me to apply for a vacancy he thought I'd be capable of doing, even though the prospective employer was looking for qualified staff. Needless to say, I didn't even get an interview. (waste of a stamp sending the application form off)

The thing is,,, We are just coming out of a recession and government are now talking of cutbacks in public services. This surely means more unemployed chasing even fewer jobs. What chance do us oldies have??

I even asked at our local Asda for details of any positions available. Last month they got rid of 3 people and have said that they won't be replacing anyone who leaves. So what now when I can't even get a job stacking shelves??

John,
Yours is the typical predicament of someone in their 50's who has worked all his life and may be part way through a mortgage who suddenly finds himself unemployed through no fault of his own.
If his monthly mortgage payment is missed because he just has not got the money the building society is breathing down his neck ready to repossess his house, its people like you who my heart bleeds for, best of luck for the future.

You try to pretend the person you're arguing with is saying something he isn't.

Until you were forced to remove it, your offensive signature made no distinction between categories of unemployed. It went along the line of:

"All benefit claimants are the scum of the earth"

You even tried to tone the signature down but it was still offensive.

Please don't now ask us to believe that you never meant all benefit claimants were scum, your signature for months said otherwise.

Yes, I know you will no doubt have an excuse. But please do not expect me to believe it.

You are a man after my own heart caring and compassionate, I like your style.

surprise surprise the mods have been called in and the anti dole bludger posts deleted.

Lol. Well I'd say the mod that is deleting these posts is probably one of the people I am debating with.

Again, my signature was a misquote of something I said in thread ' the real problem with the economy'. I mention many many times in that thread that I have no problem with the safety net but only the people ripping off the system. But lagm keeps insisting I was slagging off anyone on benefits.... much like Malcolmx is in this thread. Eventually I got bored and used it as my signature to take away his ammo.

Obviously the mods have no understanding of subtlety or irony.

Seeing as this post has got a lot of attention from so many people I would like you to write to your MP's and explain that the system of paying JSA and short term employment needs to change because its' out of date and does not fit in with today's needs.

I'll explain... On JSA you are not allowed to work more than 16hours a week without loosing your JSA. But if you did a job over 16hrs you would have to reapply for JSA.
But the job may only last a couple of weeks and you are back in the office again. Have had your hopes dashed by an employer who has used the system as a cheap labour market and then dump them with impunity they create problems, stress and disappointment to people.
What I think should happen is they use an average amount of time a person works. Say on average 16 hours a week. This is quite easy for an employer and JSA officer to do and the person can earn that extra money they need to supplement the JSA.
Anybody up for it. To write to your MP and get it changed.
