hello

I have an alpha etec33 combi boiler (which is opentherm compatible) that I have been using with a Google Nest smart thermostat (with the heatlink unit that interfaces with the boiler thru OpenTherm). I also have most of my radiators equipped with Tado TRVs. I balready habe the internet to Tado bridge device that connects voa network cable to the rother.

I am now interested in switching my boiler control to Tado as well, i.e replacing the Google Nest thermostat with a Tado solution.

Of the myriad Tado packages, wireless vs to wired, which one should i purchase

thanks

According to their product finder if your existing Nest is wired then:
Wired Smart Thermostat Starter Kit V3+

However to be sure, maybe contact Tado?

Thanks - I have asked Tado support pretty much the same question, generally find standard responses from vendors are vastly inferior to the feedback on forums.

It depends on how your existing system is laid out.

If your Heatlink is mounted next to the boiler and the thermostat is remote, then you would want the Tado V3+ wireless.

If your Heatlink and thermostat are mounted together, close to the boiler, you could have the Tado V3+ wired, but then you lose the ability to move the thermostat around if you needed to.

The Combi boiler didnt come with any thermostat (I was led to believe at je time combis dont need a thermostat, as once all the radiators have reached their setpoint, their TRVs will close, the radiator return hot water temperature will be as hot, or close to the temperature it leaves the boiler, at which point, the boiler will either modulate the heating to minimum, or shut down heating untill the TRVs open again and demand more heat..
seemed like solid logic)... which is why I got Tado TRVs to be able to close the radiators in rooms not in use.). Then, saw the google Nest, and thought it was a good idea to directly remote control the boiler also.

so, the current setup is
1) Alpha Combi boiler...
2) Retofitted with a google nest heatlink to the boilers OpenTherm connections with cables, so the heatlink and boiler are in the same cabinet in the kitchen

2a) The Nest "Thermostat" ' which is the round clock like, Apple-esque dial, is portable and can move anywhere I can connect a usb power source to.

3) The small Tado wifi bridge is connected with a lan cable.to my internet router, and manages to see.all the Tado radiator TRVs in the house.

the attached pic shows the boiler and Heatlink connections (in the picture: 1) From the boiler OpenTherm connectors (41/44) direct to correspondong OT1 and OT2 on the Heatlink

2) L/N/E from Boiler to L/N/E on Heatlink, and from there to power socket.

Yes, that's what I was asking about - the Nest Heatlink and the Nest thermostat.
The thermostat is often wall mounted and connected to the Heat link via terminals T1 and T2.
As you are using the stat remotely, powered by USB, go for the Tado V3+ wireless.

Thanks Gents... thats seems to be the way to go. Just looked at the Tado website for V3 wireless..

What's in the box
• 1 Wireless Temperature Sensor
• 1 Wireless Receiver
• 1 Internet Bridge

I guess Wireless Receiver is what links via cables to the boiler, and as such not really wireless, it is what On the Nest side of things, google calls Heatlink??

I already have the internet bridge which I got when i installed the Tado TRVs - I assume I would be able to continue using the old one as all the TRVs are already paired with it?., and save the new one for later? - and one bridge will serve both the boiler link AND the 10 TRVs I have?.

thanks.
