I took an unused clean part back to a small Heating Supplier (in Carlisle) today and they told me they don't like to take stuff back!
It was the wrong part and I did not need a credit of swap. This bloke said he usually charges 30% admin charge to place the item back on the shelf and refund. He said "we are not here to take returns, we are here to sell parts"!

Maybe I am a new breed of tradesman who believes in "working with customers" to gain trust and years of custom?

Couldn't agree more.

Luckily I have used my same suppliers for years, ever since they first opened, so they tend to be VERY lenient with me if I return parts that they usually stock.

However, if they have to place a special order then they will not accept a return unless it is faulty. I'm ok with this, as if I have mis-diagnosed the fault, then it is my own stupid fault

Parts Center are not quite so accommodating though, but they usually seal the box/part up before you take it and as long as it remains un-opened they will refund it.

I would suggest you vote with your feet and go elsewhere ;)

Some do charge, unfortunately. But it does depend on the merchant. If you are a new customer, they can be reluctant to deal with returns.

Can see their point, a small suppliers(as against the big boys) can only have X amount of stock on there shelves .It is a lot of dead money sitting there,
Simplistic view of it is if ten people came in and bought ten £100 quid parts in the space of a few weeks and then returned them they would have a £1000 quid extra of dead money sitting there again because someone else had not done there job properly by mis diagnosing a fault or making sure customer was going to pay.
Also as a new customer they don`t know you from adam.

Plumbcentre policy is also to charge 25% but rarely do.

Thats cool, because just as if I did a bad job in someones house the householder would slag me off to everyone. I will do the same to such merchant.
They are the only people I have ever dealt with that ever charge to re-stock. As Catherine Tate would say "they are taking a fackin liberty"!

So where is the bad job they have done. You asked them for a part YOU thought you needed they supplied it when YOU needed it . Good service so far, then because YOU made a mistake its their fault .Dont see it myself.
What was the part and how much was it

Not sure dave i just laughed when they put the notice up. Same as the one where they said if you wanted stuff the next day would be £3 extra,

I'd do more than laugh if my branch said that to me.

Invoiced them for £680 + VAT last month for their cock ups and they paid without question ;)

I'm not a big customer either, I suppose I average only about £10,000/month over the year.

Your terms will be altered dave so they gradually get it back. How much you paying for copper. Got it yesterday for £1.36 had been £1.51.

Edit no i didn`t cause yesterdaY was sunday, not even had a pint either

Luckily I know my exact terms and the only way they get altered is in my favour, I make sure of that:cool:

Hardly a week goes by without me being in the office getting 1/2% here and there.

Hardly a day goes by come to that, when I'm not in the office having a cup of tea or the like and trying, unsuccessfully, to chat up the gorgeous girl who works there ;)

Re Parts Center.

never been charged to restock, even brought back pcbs no problem. i've even been on stop (rubbish at paying on time) & still get parts. i've ordered one part & five have arrived in the one bag. apparently it was my lucky day.

it all depends on the guy behind the counter.

& don't forget his christmas box.

Regretfully there are some engineers who will buy a spare, repair the customer's boiler (and charge 'em for the new part) and then return the old duff part back to the merchant all nicely boxed up saying that "the probelm was something else and I don't need this bit anymore. Can I have my money back please?" So merchant takes back the part and refunds the engineer. Who's has been stitched up now?

I know of one engineer who went out and bought one of those plastic bag re-sealing machines so he could return the duff part as though it had not been opened. And he used to brag about doing it as well.
