Smart meters - who knew?

I’m with British Gas for gas & electric. For months they pestered me to get a smart meter and eventually I gave in. That was 4 years ago.

now the “in-home device” (the thing you monitor in your living room or wherever) has stopped working. I contacted BG and to my surprise was told “tough” after a year we don’t replace them! So much for the eco policy of being able to monitor your use at a glance!

I was led to believe this device was part of the meter, not a “while it works gimmick”

Not quite as instant, but you can usually log into your supplier and check consumption data with a 30 minute resolution.

It is?

I was contacted by the energy company and told that they were swapping antiquated meters for digital fellas, in my area. They told me no more need to read you own meter as it sends the reading automatically. No brainer, fit me one NOW. The gadget thing is a side show.

Would you trust the 'smart meter' in reporting your meter reading accurately for payment?
How many smart meter owners actually check their meter reading is actually what is shown on the bill?

It's really not that difficult. Light bulbs use a bit. Things that heat up, use a lot. Just turn stuff off that you are not using. You don't need a gadget to tell you that.

The data will be checksummed, with entirely automatic billing, why might it be a more error prone system than some bored guy rolling up in a van and taking a reading?

The random bloke is 'yours truly'
I feel your pain.
I used to have to shift the full shoe cupboard (none of the footwear mine), grab a torch, lift the tails of the hanging coats, in order to read the meter and then submit the reading on line and hope I got the numbers correct.

Smart meter = bliss.

..and I go out to my (becoming colder) drive once a week, to log my two readings to feed into my spreadsheet and forward to my supplier - Simply because my SM will not work with my current supplier. Working SM = Bliss.

smart meters that good BG had to change the first million they put in , have took them out and they are still registering while laying in the van . Cadent wont work on them due to their constant failures , Also why allow them to change an old gas meter , the older they get the more inaccurate they are in customers favour . Also they can do real time pricing so give it a couple of years and they will do the opposite of economy 7 and charge you extra at peak times telling people its for the good of the planet . Numpties fitting them causing house fire. Mate done a quality check on electric smart meters and 25 % were classed as dangerous for evidence of arcing and bare wire showing

British Gas are sh*t. Brother noticed they had increased his direct debit by £20 p.m. without informing him. Phoned them up and they told him it was because he hadn't sent a meter reading. He said he couldn't because his old style meter had stopped working. He had told them about it, but they had done nothing. He pressed them on what they would do about it and they said they would fix it for £180 or free if he had a smart meter - which he doesn't want. Useless, robbing tw@s!

Stopped working in what way ? registering ?

Yes, the numbers don't move any more.
Well there is definite mis communication there then because it is free for meters to be changed and its all covered by MAM, meter faults and leaks on them are completely free to the end user and why would they allow someone to carry on having free gas
