So what a horrible plan

Yep, the pound tanks every time a negative Brexit news bulletin is announced. That is not project fear but the truth.

Why is that? Is it because those in the financial world are thrilled with the news or nervous about it?

Perhaps DP has the answer...….

True, but not based on anything concrete, currency speculators are always fickle.

The pound never seems to go up though when Theresa announces yet another Brexit failure. Why is that?

Because it introduces uncertainty in the market.. not based on any real factors, it's just a big casino.

uncertainty in the market.
Uncertainty as in Brexit will be economically brilliant or Brexit will be economically poo? Would the pound actually go down if speculators thought it would be economically brilliant?

No doubt it would be interesting.. in a sort of machavellin way. But the real impact is unknown.

And as always 2 ways, selling short or selling long, who knows? If I were a gambler, I would be shorting it.

After all, pitting a seasoned broker/ experienced investors / and a cat against each other, the cat's choices turned out to be the best investment... it's all a bit random. (that's humans for you)

I wonder what a full blown no-deal Brexit would do?

Some people think it will be financial suicide. Ho hum.

I wonder what a full blown socialist government would do.

Do you mean selling short or buying long?
If you are 'shorting' something, it generally refers to you selling something that you do not own, hoping to buy it back at a cheaper rate because you expect the price to go down. But the same can apply if you do own the 'something'. So do you expect the price of the pound to fall further? Hoping to buy back those pounds later for less foreign currency? (or buy more pounds for the same amount of foreign currency?)

If you have a 'long position', it means that you are holding something expecting the price(value) to increase.
So do you mean that you would be buying pounds now, hoping that the value will increase? Hoping to sell them later for more foreign currency? {There is no dividend involved with currency holdings.)

Yes, I would sell GBP short, I would envisage if / when we leave the EU The pound would tank.

Oh I see what you mean, sorry, yes I would speculate that the pound would heavily deflate against other currencies.
