Spanish to start making claims over Gibraltar in trade talks

And they don't care if Spain shuts down all land traffic into and out of Gibraltar. Again.

They will care that it acts as a tax haven just off their coast and since we're no longer in the EU to block any attempts to get it blacklisted it's going to be hit hard given long enough for the legislation to be drafted.

There's no way this is going to go well for Gibraltar.

So the EU is going to blacklist Malta too. Nah, think you'll find the EU is a paper tiger.

Malta will be tolerated, to an extent as it has been for years, Gibraltar is now no longer part of a member state. It'll get less.

But maybe you're right. Maybe us leaving the EU means that Spain will give up on things they were demanding whilst we were members.

I'm sure Spain won't, but the EU doesn't care about Spain, it's about as important as Greece.

And yet they've already agreed to give Spain a veto on trade deals with an eye to putting pressure on Gibraltar.

Spain may be as important as Greece, but we're less important than either.

Surely Spain has a veto regardless. Spain won't want to rock the boat too much, too much trade with the UK and internal problems of their own, coupled with the fact they are a fairly insignificant EU country.

The rest of the EU have agreed to let them take a prominent lead on this. The EU disagrees with your analysis.

The 'insignificant' argument doesnt count since last night the EU 27 are united as a competitor to the UK
