Not just the vulnerable. Plenty of "fit" and "healthy" have been impacted. I was extremely surprised that the government picked up the bill for those unable to work, so generously. Sure there were fraudsters and scammers, but in the main the UK economy was shelved rather than destroyed.

The problem with covid like problems is that actions cause one effect they also cause other effects. There is no black and white solution so people have to work out the balance themselves. There are plenty around that will point out flaws. That doesn't mean a better solution exists.
One cropped up recently. An ex BofE head pointed out that too much money was pumped in because the economy was shrinking. One of the reasons for his argument is the amount of money the population has kicking around in deposited cash. A figure the BofE always has. There was a marked increase as people were not spending in a number of areas. When covid looked "cured" some of that excess was spent resulting in some degree of economic expansion.Without the excess this would not have happened. They could have gone the other way and supported people at subsistent levels. As it was done people just carried on as normal where they could. Paid there bills and didn't try and live on bread and water.
The downside. People not feeling secure which discourages people's from spending.
Fraud - feature of life. It's always going on. What's new. Given the opportunity some will do it. A lot couldn't.
Biggest mistake really. It took to long to find out that some businesses could carry on working. People buying DIY stuff from supermarkets as that was all that was open. Throw in masks, shields and distancing more could carry on running just as they did sooner Some did anyway without precautions. Bit sad really. LOL RFD's spring to mind and a big increase in the sale of air rifles. Dogs too and a number of other things.
The BofE man who pointed it all out. He hasn't a clue what would happen without the support that was given.
