Syphilis

But none of that attitude surprises me, but I would challenge any academic (of that ilk) to walk into any workshop, and be safe.

You're missing the point.

The professor (and his peers) excluded you from the Workplace Health and Safety Committee, because you're not an academic.

And he had the temerity to say so, to the DWP Select Committee.

He and his peers would not know anything about your job, but think they can tell you how to do it.

There's a trap being spun but not everyone sees the wood for trees.
Social communism in action.
They can put a small business out of action all the better if you can make it mandatory as they have with the gas register. They could pull the plug on a lot on that register if they have a mind to.
Then who moves in?

Diversion, but take what you've just said and consider it "from the other side".

You "do it right", because you're sensible, conscientious, and are "following the guidance".
But you're losing work to someone who isn't.
Enough to put your business in jeopardy.
Now what?
After all, "it's only guidance", and "it can't be enforced"......
That happens daily.

2 thoughts about it.

1, there is Always somebody who will do it cheaper.
2. Difficult to explain this, but its generally the busy fools that ignore the guidance and they often need protecting from themselves.

Are you a mobile mechanic or based in a workshop?

I use a mobile mechanic he is really great - I guess there’s a trade off between having no workshop overheads and the inconvenience of working on driveways etc
A bit of both.

I'm mobile, but have a good rapport with various garages in my area and can "rent a ramp" as I need. Which happens a lot in winter.

Plus I often subcontract to various garages depending on workloads.

It still goes on.
Yes, it does. But I believe people generally have a sense for what is right. The poll tax overturned and who knows about the ultimate future of the London ULEZ for examp;e.

What I cannot get my head around is how some people not only disagree with things, but everything has to be a conspiracy by big brother to keep the masses under control. Not only a bit of situation management but full on denial of freedoms and reducing the world's population by 6 billion.

And to go full circle you started the discussion with carman when he was asking about evidence. I see the same person has just said,

There's a trap being spun but not everyone sees the wood for trees.
Social communism in action.

If you can make sense out of that then you are a better man than me Gunga Din.

It doesn't surprise me at all.

Am i bothered by it? Nope. I run my own business and do things my way.

But, the future is bringing in electric vehicles which I and a lot of other mechanics have little or no knowledge of (in depth). Should I or others work on them without some controls ?

It isn't an easy answer.

Garages / mechanics

They will all have to sit courses at great expense in order to
Get licensed to work on leccy cars

Small garages probably won’t be able to meet the costs and jump through the hoops and deal with the pencil pushers and there ball cocks

So its off to the main dealers at there prices ???

Oh well

I know; thousands of volts, hundreds of amps, and fires that can't be extinguished......

Fuggin' red tape, eh?

;)
And that's why some controls are needed.

Is the system right? No, not by a long way.

Would I want xyz mechanic to be telling me what's right, wrong. Safe or not ? No

Do I want an arrogant academic that doesn't know the job telling me? No

But somebody needs to

Valid points but should Joe bloggs at home be allowed to work on these systems ?

You have to be registered to work on electric and gas, but anybody can work on a car (or lorry). I get to see some of that work. It's scary.
