I don't think that many people are scared, other than maybe people like you who can't face up to it and maybe life in general. Phycologists have a name for it. Some of us just call it bravado and that usually disappears completely when people face what ever it is that causes them to feel like that.
Rest of us - just take precautions, as many as we can realistically do. It's called being sensible and has nothing to do with being scared.
Also, it's not hiding anything.
Certainly the UK govt have been opportunistic, lots of contracts for mates. PPE, test and trace, lighthouse labs, vaccine manufacture and distribution etc etc
However there is a difference between opportunistic greed and some massive global scam.

It's a carona virus that leapt species from an animal to us. It's happened before but us in the west were lucky. They died out or now only get caught by a few - sars cov1 for instance. Sars cov 2 is covid. They have recently identified a number of others that may also jumps species and are hoping to come up with a vaccine that will handle all corona virus. It happens because they mutate fairly easily as covid has. Covid also caused a worry when it jump to mink. Rather a lot of them were killed in case that caused it to mutate even more and make all of the vaccine work pointless. It may do that all of it's own accord anyway.
Ever so simple - they need mantras and generally come up with ones that suite circumstances. You may have noticed that interest rates countries are charged on loans dropped prior to covid. Corbyn mentioned it several times. Tories want to level up the country - where do you think the money was coming from. While they probably wont provide free high speed internet their intentions are similar to Corbyn's. Rates are probably being cut as the west is having problems keeping up with China.
