From memory, the Guiness Book of Records (before it was so shamefully dumbed down) used to list ethyl mercaptan as the worst.

Or could have been "strongest", as in most detectable, which is not the same as worst, even though ethyl mercaptan does have a very unpleasant smell.

ethyl mercaptan .

Not sure if you mean the same thing, only know the Dutch word for this (when making ethyl alcohol, this bit is 'created' first and smells really terrible): Foezel -oil
(But used in perfume industry, strangly enough, cause it it's very easily 'taken' over by other smells).
Sometimes, when foezle oil was spilled in the factory, people form the production department would walk in the spil and than walk over to the office departments ;)

This is the stuff they put in household gas, I believe, as Methane is of course odourless and we couldn't smell it if there was a gas leak. I also recall that we are very sensitive to it, that's why it's put in gas.

Yeah, it could be the strongest smell, rather than the nastiest.

There's something in Marmite that makes me retch. I don't know what it is though.

Durian.

Or my baby's soiled nappy, close-up.

Not much between them, actually!

dimethylamine is enough to make most folks puke, it's the smell of rotting flesh. I've had the misfortune to smell it, produces an almost instant gagging effect.

Our cats brought a dead pigeon in once, and that was none too fresh after a week in the wheelie bin......

I was a coastguard for 15 yrs, one time we had a call to a cave where a visitor reported a bad smell but too dark to see, it was suspected a dead seal had been washed in and rotting but no, it was a man who had been living rough in there and died of hypothermia, he had been there for a few months, the sea had come in and the body was floating and starting to come apart so we had to collect all the bits and put them in a bag, it was my worst call out and the smell I will never forget.

I ate some, on Pangkor Island, whilst holding the sniffer.... lovely taste, not a bit like the smell .... Still smells the same tho ... Blimey, forgot about the breath.. sewage smells sweet compared to Durian..
Some Hotels in Malaysia ban the stuff from their premises.
:) :) :) :D

Unfortunately the stuff I smelt was pure Analytical Reagent stuff, spew!! It's highly toxic BTW!

I used to be an analytical chemist. What about DMF? It's a slow, sickly feeling that creeps up on you. Didn't make me gag though.

Durian is a fruit native to Thailand and Malaysia.
