i picked up a new runaround on wednesday, a Kia picanto 1.1. it was done on scrappage and i got £2K for the old one. it's taken 2 months from ordering for it to arrive in the country. when i ordered it the tax was going to be £35, said the salesman. when i collected it, the tax was actually £0.00 for 12 months!?
it seems that recently, coinciding with the scrappage, DVLA has introduced a 'first year' tax structure with new bands on a sliding scale from £0 to (i think) £450. anyone who receives or buys a new car from 1 Apr will pay these new rates for the first year, reverting to standard rates thereafter.
seems like no-one informed the dealers, so people have been ordering cars, in Feb and March, expecting to save via the scrappage allowance , then finding out that up to £450 is clawed back on tax (on bigger engines), with deals consequently falling through, for that sole reason.
group 1 insurance cost meant only £35 extra to transfer from the old car to the new.
spiralling motoring costs for bigger cars will eventually have the desired effect, with people opting for ever-smaller ones. not a bad thing when you compare fuel consumptions.
a 7 year warranty from Kia puts the icing on the cake. it's not a bad little car, either, for around town. air-con, and stereo!
i have a Sedona for load-lugging. 5 years old and no trouble apart from people keep driving into it.
the FJR is for weekend fun and assisted suicide....

it's brill, Kar. i got the 1.1. strike, but like i said, £2K off. simple, cheap to run and the warranty is a killer. no repairs for 7 years. simples. air con for the summer in town

That's not strictly true though is it? The warranty doesn't cover all the parts does it?

all parts except things which obviously wear in normal use. brake pads, tyres etc. the clutch is a wear part but it should last forever unless you rally it

1.0 Corsa, tax due end of April.
Reminder came in at £120.00
Paid on line, it had gone down to £110.00
