Try this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_conditioning , follow the links, do some interwebby searches.

Basically though think of it as a pump (this is not an explanation of how it works, just a way to get you to see how it's possible to do what johnb80 says). It is able to pump heat from the outside to the inside. Even when the outside air is quite cold, there is still heat that can be removed - just look inside your fridge or freezer for an example of how much heat can be removed from air. Because you only have to drive the pump, the amount of heat you move from one place to another is a lot more than the amount of energy that the pump uses. 4x more is common, I believe.

ground source heat pumps are becomin more common - there is more heat in the ground than in the air, especially in winter. Not sure if this variety can cool inside too, i mean, it would be heating the ground up

To make air conditioning super efficient, dont forget insulation is a big consideration - especially at the bottom of the house. If you have suspended wooden ground floor with no insulation, consider getting this done first. Apparently in the states, they put mega amounts of insulation in houses that are going to have air con.

And the heat you get out of a heat pump, as ban says, is much more than the energy it takes to operate it. A fan heater takes in about 2.1kw and gives out 2kw of heat (a bit lost to noise and operating the fan). A heat pump takes in, say, 2kw to operate the compressor, yet could get 8kw of heat to disperse in your room. The cooling capacity is always slightly less.

I notice in a lot of small shops, they only have air con to remove heat generated by the refrigeration. What a waste. Why not have fridges with outdoor compressors? This would save so much energy, I dont know why they dont do it. It could half the need for air con, even negate it all together.

If you want real air con, get a professionally installed unit. It you want a toy and something to do on an idle sunday afternoon, get a DIY unit, but dont expect wonders from it. Pro units can be installed practically anywhere, and are much more flexible and durable.

My endless pool helps :D

All the benefits of a full size pool at only 8 x 15 feet

p.s. I expect this post to be deleted for advetising ;)

I know these pools are popular in the US and also used in the UK for training etc. Are they as good as they say or were you just joking?

They seem to get advertised on this site too, perhaps thats why you weren't modded? ;)

Sadly, I am unable to answer your question as I am too distraught at having seen my quote bastardised by your bold type.

PATHETIC.

Ever tried the spellchecker?

Catching Badly Spilled Words with Spalling Checker

As an extra addled service, I am going to put this posed in the Spilling Checker, where I tryst it will sale through with flying colons. In this modern ear, it is simply inexplicable to ask readers to expose themselves to misspelled swords when they have bitter things to do.

And with all the other timesaving features on my new work processor, it is in realty very easy to pit together a colon like this one and get it tight. For instants, if there is a work that is wrong, I just put the curse on it, press Delete and its
Well sometimes it deletes to the end of the lion or worst yet the whole rage. Four bigger problems, there is the Cat and Paste option. If there is some test that is somewhere were you wish it where somewhere else you jest put the curse at both ends and wash it disappear. Where you want it to reappear simply bring four quarts of water to a rotting boil and throw in 112 pounds of dazed chicken. Sometimes it brings in the Cat that was Pasted yesterday.

But usually it comes out as you planed, or better. And if it doesn't, there are lots of other easy to lose options...

When using a heat pump for heating you can see efficiency's up to 500%. It seems impossible but it's not and no, you're not getting something for nothing and we haven;t discovered perpetual motion either! When using a heat pump the electrical energy is used to remove heat from the air outside and transfer it inside. Even in winter time the system works wee (not with such high efficiency levels though but still good). If you can imaging moving say 1000 cu ft of air though the external unit and removing say 0.5 deg C from it. Now transfer that energy stored in a gas to an indoor unit which puts that enery into only 10 cu ft of air - it gets hot!

I've used my aircon units when we've seen -17 outside and my living room has been at a very comfortable 21 deg C, the real selling point for me though is the ability to have comfort all year round, the dryer atmosphere makes for a much more comfortable environment.

Regards - John

Thanks John (and BAS) - I feel a little bit wiser today than I did yesterday.... :D

Try to put the outdoor unit in a sheltered spot though. We have problems with ours defrosting every 5 minutes in winter, because the snow and rain freezes on the back of the unit, blocking the air intake. It defrosts quickly though, only takes about a minute and the ice has gone!
