FT analysis of data from 19 countries finds Britain hit hardest, ahead of US, Italy, Spain and Belgium

The UK has suffered the highest rate of deaths from the coronavirus pandemic among countries that produce comparable data, according to excess mortality figures. The UK has registered 59,537 more deaths than usual since the week ending March 20, indicating that the virus has directly or indirectly killed 891 people per million. At this stage of the pandemic, that is a higher rate of death than in any country for which high-quality data exist. The absolute number of excess deaths in the UK is also the highest in Europe, and second only to the US in global terms, according to data collected by the Financial Times.

The numbers are probably robust, the comparison isn't. Life expectancy and population distribution does need to be accounted for.

Comparison in all cases is for excess deaths, i.e. more deaths than normal.
Therefore your other factor, of life expectancy, is already taken into account.
With the exception of US, the other EU countries probably have a very similar population density to UK.
Also, Germany has about the same population density, whereas Belgium is significantly higher.
I would suggest that population density is a red herring and an attempt to excuse this government of woeful inadequacy.

We are an Island - we should have found controlling this virus far easier but Bojo was too busy going on holidays or making a case for private exchange and taking it on the chin.

In Jan/Feb Boris should have closed all borders and banned all entry/exit to the UK, he should have put the country into 100% lockdown, stopping all commercial activities and ensured that all households could only be fed with food deliveries managed by the military. All those who ventured outside ignoring the rules to be shot on sight.....including Cummings, Kinnock and all the others who did likewise. That would have fixed it!!!!

Perhaps you can give an example of what you mean by those vague words.

Which of these charts do you think is wrong?

"When Boris Johnson sought to defend his government from criticism over the mounting death toll in the UK at the end of April, he said using international comparisons, such as of those who had died after testing positive, was “bedevilled with difficulties”.

The UK prime minister added: “The only real comparison is going to be possible at the end of the epidemic when you look at total excess deaths.”

So, the excess death rate went down in South Africa and Israel. That’s right, the excess death rate went down in a global pandemic. Why do you think that is, if those figures are to be believed?

I don't know. Is that what you call an example?

Turning to countries that are comparable to the UK, however, what happened in France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, RoI, Austria?

Well, I don’t believe the excess death rate falls in any country when there’s a global pandemic so I’ll take those figures with a pinch of salt.

It didn't fall in such countries.

But in UK, it rose worst.

That'll be the fact you want to avoid.

Why is everything about this country always shoite? We don't appear to be able to do anything properly for ourselves. We excel at being rubbish, ie. most stupid, obese tattooed drunken people, record numbers of single parents, high violent crime, dumping ground for the world's dross paid for by a naive, cowed population through rip off taxes. Smallest, $h ittiest houses that cost telephone number prices. Congested, potholed polluted roads.

I do realise these aren't unique to us, but we do seem to excel at being crap in as many areas as humanly possible. Now the government is busy cobbling together a 'world class' track and trace app at the 11th hour, and our Kung Flu death rates are the highest. Even after a ruinous lockdown that the government can't even be arrsed to follow themselves. Are we surprised that our lying, cheating government has let a deadly plague get out of control?

They were having a good year. The excess is normally an average of the last 5 years or so. If they'd had a bad year or two that can result in this year being better, in that case they'd just need to keep the Covid-19 deaths well contained to keep the total below average.

In a bad year winter deaths in the UK can be significantly higher than normal, all it'd take to get the effect shown would be a couple of those in 2015-2019 and none this year.

Perhaps more would normally be murdered, or die in RTAs, or of things like gastroenteritis, which have been reduced through recent more rigorous personal hygiene?

the weathers nice at the moment :)

If people compare excess death rates in Europe it seems that the methods used should be comparable as there is a standard. But what excess death rate. The interesting one is lung related really compared with other years. There may be some mileage in the comment on the brief - wait until they are finally released by all countries.
