up the garden path...

Well it's either

4950-5049

or

4951-5050

in mm

depending on rounding rule. No doubt that is something that is assumed but I cannot remember what they taught you that far back.

If I got that wrong there is a long list of people on here ready to pounce

Your first post said it was Janes garden, then your daughters homework says jeanette's garden, do they live together?

Am I missing something here? 1/10 of a metre is 10cm. So the garden has been measured to the nearest 10cm or 0.1m.

If you want the answer in mm, I would say the shortest it could possibly be is 4950mm and the longest it could be is 5049mm.

Is that correct?

4845-5144

You're only measuring to the nearest tenth, so it could be either 4.9 or 5.1 metres long
So if we are specifying metres to 3 decimal places, and rounding up and down the shortest length possible is 4.845 mtrs and the longest is 5.144mtrs.

So you're all wrong.

Especially chappeau...who's been trained in science to a higher level than most.

10th of a what? Are you saying to the nearest 50cm i.e your tape measure only has units of 0.5m on it?

If so, think of the tape measure with units of 50cm on it, and that should help you work it out.

clarification 10th of a metre..

Ok, so you have a tape measure with marks every 10cm. The question isn't really complete as you would need to say what units to give the answer in eg cm.

But the concept is about rounding.

lets say it's to be answered in MM

I'll edit it above too
5000 then???
5100 or 4900 mm.

4845 is shorter than 4900 nige, and 5144 is longer than 5100 so......you're fired.
