ok 4845mm is shorter than 4900mm nige, and 5144mm is longer than 5100mm so......you're still fired.

Well I never, we're all wrong.

I've done me some googling on GSCE maths and found this page here

http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/maths/number/roundestimaterev5.shtml

The answer, according to the GCSE revision, appears to be 4950-5050

Well no wonder GCSE are rubbish, cannot even get that simple question right :)

And where is the calculus? We had calculus at O-Level, have they got rid of calculus at GCSE level? What rubbish.

I think we need to know what the teacher said

Kerching!

I said 4950-5050

teach said
4950 - yes
5050 -wrong

her answer was 5040 ... as 5050 could be rounded up (although no mention of this was made on the sheet???)

What rubbish

Lot easier when it's all letters and funny greek characters

Reet.

What I think they are saying is that the lower limit is actually 4950.000 mm which rounds to 4950.

The upper boundary is actually 5049.999 mm which rounds to 5050.

So range is 4950-5050.

We's is thinking too hard. Not a good way to do a GCSE obviously.

No mate that's the answer for the upper and lower Bounds
the correct answer the posted question (regarding min and max lengths ) is
4950 and 5049

Edit missed your post above, you could have a point there

Well I don't like the answer, I said it's what they say.

But I assume this is a GCSE question, and all the GCSE resources I have seen on the internet talk about measuring things, and all come up with the way of working out the answer given.

i.e divide by two and add/subtract that number.

Now if the question was wrong..............

Not another impossible question, oh my god, please help us, cue Joe.

where does it say mm?

If it's cm, and the answer is given to the nearest cm, then she's right surely...............

I still think that my initial reaction is correct (or at least logical) (in mm)
4951 - 5050

4950 should be rounded down

Maybe so - but the OP question appeared to be a real world one  not some poxy rounding up / down mathematical principle  . "A line and a rule guide many a fool" -- I rest my case

Well it's a maths exam question, some would say testing mathematical principles matter when taking a maths exam. Does that make me an old git?

But it's also a GCSE so let's not make it too mathematical, the little darlings might not like that, too hard and they all have to get A*s now......

Interesting none of us got the 'approved' answer, even the teacher seemed to get it 'wrong', how old is teacher out of interest?

Well when I went to school (not all that long ago) we were taught that the 'rule of thumb' for rounding was that anything half way between or over should be rounded UP and anything below half way should be rounded down.

Therefore 4949mm would be rounded DOWN to 4.9m 4950 would be rounded UP to 5.0m.

5049 would be rounded down to 5.0m and 5050 would be rounded UP to 5.1m.

So if the answer is not 4950mm and 5049mm then things have changed since I was at school!!
