I honestly don't think it is a different issue. Afterall, they're all immigrants by another name. Yes, we were (and still are being) stitched up by the other 'safe' European countries but that doesn't mean that we shouldn't have stood firm and sent them back!Now that's a different issue entirely which relates to how our fellow EU members fail to follow the agreed rules, as you well know you little mischief maker.I don't think any asylum seekers whatsoever should have been allowed to stay in this country bearing in mind they all went through several 'safe' countries to get here
If we as a country don't want to be viewed as or treated like a walkover, then we shouldn't act like it.
We all know why the likes of Blair and Brown have allowed this to happen,if they keep their noses clean they all get top jobs in the EU

The UK's argument is with the EU, since the agreed rule is that an asylum seeker should seek and be granted asylum by the first safe country he comes to. Geographically, this should clearly mean that the UK is pretty much the last port of call. Why the UK doesn't stand firm on this is a complete mystery - the camps at Calais have only just been mostly disbanded by the French who should have first shout to offer asylum to the occupants, in comparison with the UK.I honestly don't think it is a different issue. Does Blair work for the EU? Has Brown shown an interest (last I heard is that he would like to be involved in charity fundraising schemes - not exactly high up in EU agendas)
Regrettably, it does seem to be increasingly the case. The only reason for the UK to remain will be financial - and so we have come full circle to having to verify joe-90's assertion than most of our trade and therefore income is from the other member states.

agreed. doesn't the fact that seekers were queuing up in Calais to get to the UK speak volumes? why cross all these borders to reach the furthest point north-west. i have no doubt they couldn't speak English (or French or German etc etc.), but our welfare state and benefit system are our most famous exports, and everyone understands 'free money'.
France has a population density 1/6 of ours. loads of space to build a series of 'Milton Keynes new towns' for 'asylum seekers'. but that isn't where these people want to be. we are far more charitable, god help us.
