Try double-declutching on your way into reverse - does that stop the crunch?
I believe you are right. Looking on the web, it appears it is a common fault with Vauxhalls: the clutches don't auto-adjust. And mentioning the problem to my colleague he said "I had that with my Vauxhall, clutch needed adjusting".
Works fine if I leave it a few seconds after pressing the clutch in, I guess then the gearbox has stopped spinning and the gears don't crunch against each other.
