The 'death rate' at any one time is pretty meaningless because the peaks and troughs, or waves, of the pandemic affects different countries at different times and at different rates.Yes, we have had more total deaths than France since the pandemic began (assuming they are using the same counting methods as the U.K. - are they? ) but what I’d call the current 'death rate' is a lot less. Yesterday France had 308 deaths attributed to Covid and the U.K. had 51.
France deaths in last 7 days: 1992
UK deaths in last 7 days: 328
Hence my first post in this thread - "They are going into lockdown just as we are coming out of ours? Why? Is it because they were slow on the vaccine uptake? Will the rest of Europe, including us, follow?"
Obviously the percentage of the population vaccinated does appear to be a major effect. One would expect that, and I would have thought it was utterly obvious, otherwise the urgency of the vaccine rollout would be pointless. But you can only vaccinate with the doses that you have available. France, and I assume other EU countries, are ensuring that both doses can be administered, or will be available to be administered.
Here is a website with probably all the answers to your questions.
