What have you been doing today?

I'm sometimes surprised to see folk (of all ages) out in icy/snowy weather with their year round footwear on. Maybe not as much of an issue when you're younger (let's slide ... yipee!!!) but when you're older it's a different story.

It's a stout pair of walking boots for me. Thicker sole, so lower heat loss and much better grip on the icy bits. I've never been confident sliding on ice, even when I was young - my legs just lock up. I had one fall, landing on concrete, on my coccyx, and it is incredibly painful.

I keep promising myself a pair of those cleat things, which slip onto your footwear, supposed to dig into the ice and snow to provide grip.

Just got back from our light show with the family. It wasn’t half bad actually. Young Henry loved it. There was a 'wish tree' where kids could write a wish and stick it on. Henry wished for snow and bugger me, did we get some! Came down thick and fast and the journey back from Chelmsford on the A12 was a bit hair raising. I can’t remember ever having driven on an A road with snow falling so heavy - we were down to just over 30mph at one point. Anyway, home now and the snow has just stopped. I think more is forecast for later.

I do wear the same shoes all year round (I have 2 pairs) because they are custom orthotics.

But I chose for the Winter, so they are like walking boots with a good thick sole and chunky tread and a decent upper.

Not snow, but fog. It was November 1990, I think. Me and the first Mrs Secure went to see the Blackpool lights. Coming back on the M55 it was down to almost zero visibility and I could only do a few miles per hour. Real thick stuff, like the peasoupers down the Smoke in the 50s.

Could not see further than the end of the bonnet. This lasted all the way home. I was really worried we might get rear-ended.

Looking at the news this morning with the M25 at a standstill last night, we did well to get home when we did. Same with our daughter who had to go A12/M25 to get back to North London.

Mrs Mottie told me to sort out all the clothes and shoes in my wardrobe today and put them in three piles. Ones I’m keeping, ones for the charity shop, and ones that are to be chucked. I guess the ones that the moths have had a munch on are to be chucked. Just like when you lose a spanner, it’s always a Snap-On one, why do moths only eat the good clothes? One of my most comfortable sweaters. Why?

Went to work today, 15 minutes after the session was due to have started (which is not that unusual), still no students here. Phoned up the tutor and she said "Hasn't Sharon called you"? "No" I said. "Oh, she was supposed to call you - we've taken them on a trip today and won't be there".

Now, in the past I would have called them all the stupid lazy xxxxing xxxxs under the sun but I'm a lot more chilled these days. They've paid handsomely for the complete hire of me and the premises so I just locked up, went home and put my feet up. Next session for the same school is on Friday - last day of their term and I can almost guarantee that that will be a free day for me too. Fingers crossed! ;)

Got up and had breakfast and a few cups of tea, had a shave and a shower, had some more tea, had a few bids on an auction, no luck, had some lunch and more tea, just cleared snow from the car. Back in the warm now and going to have another cup of tea.

You need a cup of tea after all that…..

Early morning dog walk before work this morning. Plenty of snow still about.

Years ago I took the dog on a nice long walk - 3 miles through the local woods in the snow, and it turned into a nightmare with icicles forming on the poor thing's legs and feet. I've never been tempted to walk a dog far in the snow since then.

I've been trying to teach the present one to wait on command, until all of her dinner is in her dish, or until hot food cools down etc.. She has rather 'over learned' - instead of just waiting to eat when she's told to wait, she always now sits looking at her dish, until you tell her she can start eating. She gets any left-overs, tinned meat and some dry mixer. Today, her left-overs were no left over - I gave her a purpose made omelette. Every time I open the fridge, to take the milk out to make myself a drink, she steps on my toe to tell me she would like some too. I just give her the minimum amount I can get away with, she is already too fat.

What I learned this week, was to watch for the word 'complete' on dog foodstuffs. The word is only allowed to be used, where the food contains all the vitamins and minerals they need.
