What have you been doing today?

I've been up in the attic putting some stuff up there, that I really should throw away.
The dog was making a fuss as I was going up the ladder, so I put her on my shoulder and took her up too.
She loved it, but wasn't too keen to go over my shoulder for the return trip.

Our cat once climbed the ladder into the loft. Wouldn’t come down when called and impossible to catch. Left the hatch open and she called for me to bring her down a good few hours later when it was her dinner time!

There are two 12v batteries, cover off, the first came out easy enough, but I was stumped by the second one, and ended up unbolting the very heavy seat, whilst trying to work out how to access #2.

Then later, I ordered up the two replacement batteries. I didn't at first realise, you could get them with a 20% discount (no VAT), if you were disabled. There is a basic declaration form you can download, print, to be used with each order, or the supplier can send you their own version of the form.

I'm pretty sure that most mobility aids are exempt from vat if you are disabled. AFAIK you only have to self-declare and don't need a doctors certificate or anything like that so as long as they don't know about those 7 mile walks you go on you should get away with it. ;)

I'm up at my workshop repairing some fences, painting them, washing overalls and generally tidying the place up as I'm finishing off a few qualifications for some of last years students that didn't quite complete last academic year. Literally just Friday afternoons up until Christmas and then that's DEFINITELY it. Retirement is calling along with renting out the workshop!

Oh, going to look at the brakes on the Golf as one minute they work, next they don't! I suspect its a sticking rear caliper that's getting hot, boiling the fluid and giving me one big compressible steam bubble in the system.

Yep, they accepted a self declaration, but if necessary I could back it up via doctors records.

If you do claim a VAT discount for disability, when you aren't disabled, be prepared to have them go through your bank accounts with a fine toothcomb for at least the past 6 years.
You may think they accept your self-declaration, but they have to declare on their business accounts and if these are audited and it shows up, it may lead to an investigation being started.
The difference between what you save, and what you may pay in penalties, is simply not worth it.

I wouldn't do such a thing, and especially for the "tempting fate" angle.

Be good, stay lucky (y)

It’s not like you’re buying a battery for a low-slung sports car and claiming a disabled vat exemption. It’s a battery for a stair lift.
