I know they have - and having worked with people from Eastern Europe, who came here to work, and some from elsewhere, who had the attitude that the UK was a free meal ticket and that they could lie, cheat, chisel and skive their way through life, I do know the difference. I'm afraid that there are some nationalities I'd be leery of ever employing again (or having them foisted on me). I'll say no more lest I am accused of racism

We had a golden opportunity as a country to do the right thing by these poor people who have been the victims of a brutal war.
We could have shown other countries that despite leaving the EU, we got our 5h1T together and did the right thing for humanity.
Other countries managed it. Germany's citizens turned out in force, showing how many people they could accept into their homes.
The Irish premier dropped all red tape to allow citizens of Ukraine to stay.
Our efforts have been a complete and utter shambles. Absolutely pathetic.
If this is taking control, you can stuff it where the sun don't shine.

i dont think the average tory commentator in power dont seems to have a heart or soul ??
people are fleeing war and the straw man off non desirable Russians coming in against those genuinely sleeking a safe haven put forward as reason to demonise any one fleeing genuine war is pathetic when you take and launder Russian money virtually with impunity
the threat off espionage is always there and who cares how they come in they are 100% sophisticated and suggesting a refugee route makes sense is pure politics playing to the audience as there will be hundreds already here doing putins work so what possible advantage can being overzealous in the name off security have ??

These folk will mostly want to go back home, which makes them different.
Yes I do have more affinity with people more like me. I know there are people who find that unacceptable. Tough.

I was very skeptical about the Romanians.. yet I made some great friendships with Romanians and Poles. But their own admission was that there was some wrongs who mixed in their circles, not that I can say I have ever seen. I think both good additions to our country as I know the Ukrainians are and will be. But I want them to have their country back.

The Romanians came with a bad reputation for being light fingered, and as you say there were some wrong 'uns. The Moldovans I have worked with were generally hard workers, as were the Ukranians and Latvians. We had a couple of Polish duds (they were referred to as "mouse men", meaning their qualification papers were fake), but that was about it. The biggest issue I've had with them is their lax approach to Health & Safety. Yet we left the EU ostensibly to rid ourselves of this burden (?)
One of the things which made life easier was learning a little bit of other peoples languages and a bit about their cultures. I might only be able to say good morning, good afternoon, thank you and good in a few languages, but even that breaks down the suspicion and tenmsion a lot (I do speak several other languages with varying amounts of fluency having worked in Europe, just not any Eastern European ones)
Like you I have no issues with taking Ukranians on a temporary basis - hell, the area I live in has some families who came here from Ukraine after WWII to get away from the Russians (Rochdale and Manchester have vibrant ex-pat and 2nd/3rd generation communities) - but I am growing increasingly angry and frustrated by the lack of action by those dithering dullards in Westminster

Regardless of your views on whether or not it's right to allow people into the UK on the premise they are fleeing something, it's only going to get worse. Putting unrest of this kind aside, if we believe climate experts, millions upon millions will be displaced from their homelands in the decades to come due to climate change. They'll all need to go somewhere.

They need to get their **** in gear I know they do..... but you know what's going to happen....don't you.... once they do open the door you Notch and the others will harp on about letting the draw bridge down to the middle east and Africa.
