The Court of Justice of the European Union last week ruled that the UK will no longer be able to offer a reduced 5% rate of VAT on energy-saving products for homes – a decision that drew an angry response from the Energy Saving Trust and insulation products manufacturer Knauf.

A statement from the EU court read: “The United Kingdom cannot apply, with respect to all housing, a reduced rate of VAT to the supply and installation of energy-saving materials, since that rate is reserved solely to transactions relating to social housing.”

Cameron claims to want to stop Europe meddling in our affairs, so perhaps he could start with this one. Clearly insulation products will now be going up in price.

On a wider note, is Cameron really up to the job of re-negotiating our relationship with the EU? He has been slapped down so many times.
For all her faults, Maggie would not have been so spineless when dealing with Europe.

Just another example of our lack of true sovereignty...

So more of a portion of the full VAT goes to The EU no doubt.

I sometimes wonder whether 'the victors' really win....

Germany (defeated in two WWs) seems to be growing ever stronger and ruling the roost by dictating to the rest of Europe (so we ended up with a German Dictatorship after all...)

France, the cheeky %^$£, have just told Belgium to reject their new 2 Euro coin because it celebrates Waterloo and could cause the poor old frogs to get upset. They too (France) appear to be dictating much of what Europe does.

Time to get rid of that tunnel and tell Europe to s&d off.

Let's face it - do we really actually like any of Europe anyway??

"No one likes us - we don't care"

You'll have no argument from me about the EU. For far too long now the EU has meddled in our own countries affairs. Telling us what to do at (almost ) every turn of the way. Personally, I don't care what Cameron manages to re-negotiate on our behalf. Come 2017 I shall vote to leave the EU (and hope the majority of the UK vote the same)

I, too, am heartily sick and tired of hearing how the EU is dictating to us things that are undoubtedly contrary to our well being as a country. It's almost as if they despise us for some reason and see us as sufficiently weak enough to be dictated to in this way.

They're right, of course. It seems that every other EU country simply ignores rulings with which they disagree. We, on the other hand, meekly do exactly what we are told.

Indeed, I see Cameron as probably our weakest PM in memory. Yes, he talks a lot and promises what he thinks we want to hear, but when it comes to actually doing something he is sadly lacking. Moreover, he is becoming infamous for his U-turns. Not a good PM at all.

I agree that the ONLY way to regain what we have lost since joining the EU (which we never voted for, by the way) is to leave as soon as possible. Unfortunately, Cameron has shown his hand in that, as many predicted, he would do all he could possibly do to keep us in (for his own advantage, of course), including (before his latest U-turn) threatening his ministers with the sack if they supported our exit.

If England and Scotland have such different laws - how do you equate that with control by Brussels?

Quite so; the Germans, and Dutch, do to an extent follow the rules, though perhaps less slavishly than we do.

The Latins on the other hand feel free to ignore them. The net result is that in the UK we have unproductive officials enforcing rules which put us at a competitive disadvantage compared with the rest of the EU.

Absolutely crazy.

Are our laws so much different from the English though? If yer caught drink driving here, you can expect a ban and a hefty fine. If yer caught committing a burglary, you'll end up in the Sheriffs court (instead of the magistrates) Fines and prison sentencing is much the same (possibly harsher here)
Is Scotland so different from the rest of the UK ??

England and Scotland have very similar laws (in many cases identical) but it is their legal system which differs.

In other words, the method and terminology differ considerably. This is mainly due to differing influences in the early days of their respective legal systems.

Whilst there are also differences in other areas of law, the bulk of criminal law in both Scotland and England is the same. That criminal law, however, is applied using differing processes and different ways of presenting evidence. Everything from arrest through detention and subsequent prosecution is widely different in the two countries BUT the actual offences and potential penalties remain more or less the same.

A lot of it is merely different terminology (e.g. Sheriff Court instead of Magistrates Court and High Court instead of Crown Court) but there are some significant differences viz.

Limits on detention without charge
Adverse influence on right of silence
Procurator Fiscal System
Age of criminal responsibility
Juries of 15 persons
Verdict of Not Proven
Appellant Court System

In any event, Scots Law - as in English Law - can be influenced by European Court Rulings and, some might say, more so (because the roots of Scots Law mean it is closer to European Law than English Law)

In this particular case we are talking about VAT which is set (at present) by HM Government thus these differences will not apply [assuming The UK don't carry on regardless]

My view on camoron is that he is a Europhile and will do whatever he's told to do by the germans.

Bro has visited france a few times on organised bus load agricultural trips to see how things are done out there.

One of the things they learned was French farmers only comply with a fraction of the legislation that is heaped upon UK farmers.

The reality is, in the UK our own jobs worth civil servants enforce eu legislation with a zealotry not unlike the ss commandants of the third reich during ww2.
Back stabbers every one of them.

Only for the lingo barrier and upheaval of moving he would be gone.
Also in france the farmer is King.

Here he's just a boiler suited hick who spends his time toiling at the silage face.

Don't buy into the Maggie Myth . Like she did with other things , She talked the talk but didn't walk the walk.

She signed the SEA.

Maggie put her life on the line when she stood up to irish rebels.
No cowardly political arze wipe did that before or after.
That's why us loyal Ulstermen hold her in high esteem.

If it wasn't for being pressurized by the yanks she could have beaten them.
The sas round that time were cutting lumps out of irish rebels.

Bull?
She was in secret talks with them while publicly saying she would not negotiate.

'Round that time' South Armagh was a no go area for the Army.

As I said , disregard the myth. Look at the facts of history.

Yes bull.

And the army were living in sa btw yomping and doing check points and taking bullets in the back and the sas were doing what they do best. Infiltrating.

Norcon.

The facts are this:

She had secret talks with IRA when publicly saying she would not negotiate with them.

She signed the SEA .

Do you deny these facts which are a matter of public record?

Simple yes or no.
