The BBC News have run the story and spoke to the son in Los Angeles. He claims his father became ill in the UK while on holiday with son and wife and was taken to hospital. The wife and son then flew home to the USA on the flights they had booked.

And did they say why they didn't come back to get him, and wouldn't the travel insurance have handle new flights. This is definitely an new twist on health tourism
