I'm sure on a tv prog years back I saw a politician (can't recall which party) say that moving forward we'll need less public facing police as the ways in which crime is committed was changing e.g. cyber criminals etc. I've heard the same said more recently re troops, less boots on the ground required because the way wars are fought is changing. Whilst there are obviously threads of truth in this, You'll never convince me we should have less public facing police and front line troops. No doubt just waffle to excuse the cuts they make.
And we had years of successive Govts telling us crime rates were plummeting, why would you increase police numbers if crime were falling?
I was never convinced crime rates ever did fall, but yes, the nature of the crimes did change.
