A brexit benefit

the continued use of imperial was putto be in 2007.
The then plan had be to eventually move to metric only but they came to an agreement that Ireland and the UK could continue using what they wished within their borders.
It was never "illegal" to use imperial, but it was illegal to to have the prices also marked up in metric.

To me that makes sense - the UK took the final decision to move to full metrication in 1965.
Nothing to do with the EU. Neither was decimalisation.
Even American cars are metric nowadays, partly due to common parts around the world.

Same as the pint glass crown. It's still there, although not a "legal" requirement.
It's a representation of what was once the effective "hall mark" of certification.

There's a typo in my quoted statement. It should have said " it was illegal to not have the metric weight and price displayed"

The "Metric Martyrs" were not found guilty of selling in imperial, they were guilty of using scales that did not conform to Trading Standards regs.

A set of mass comparators for use by council Trading Standards Officers will cost in excess of £30k - no doubt any old scales will have been disposed of years ago. So look forward to

The uk signed the OIML treaty in 1856 and Britain officially accepted Metric in 1875

Any idea who uses Imperial?
The USA (using customary units that differ from ours) and Myanmar - hardly an export bonus
BTW the USA also signed the OIML treaty and uses a lot of metric in it's dealings with Canada and Mexico

I endured imperial for the first 11 years of my working life. NEVER again.

I don't entirely believe you. If you spent the first eleven years of your life thinking 'Oh my God this imperial stuff is so complicated' then you are by your own admission as thick as a whale sandwich. The reality is when metric came along it made more sense and after an adjustment period was easier to use, but don't tell me that in a merchant you don't refer to sheet materials as 8 x 4 or 3 x 2,
