But how can we have reduced deaths whilst there is Covid-19!?!?

Excess deaths are a good measure of how the country fared as a combination of Covid-19 and lockdown. But as you say, not for Covid-19 deaths. covid deaths could be higher or lower.

What is clear is the earliest Covid-19 numbers are definitely low. The later numbers where we can actually test people before they die shouldn't be massive under estimates, but might even be over estimates due to silly number counting.

Can anyone explain, why on the 10th Aug we had 67 critical cases and on the 11th Aug we had 102 deaths ...........

All other countries show a small proportion of the critical cases as deaths, the following day.

Some of it will be when the deaths occur and when they are reported. A lot of the metrics don't separate them out.

Also not everyone who's going to die of Covid-19 will be going into critical care. Sometimes it's clear that putting someone on intubation just won't help.

I follow that, but why do all other countries show deaths as a small proportion, of critical cases, we are the only one out of line.

Pass. When you get to that level of detail you've got to dig into it closely. Who knows if we're still reporting anyone who does having had a previous positive result as a Covid-19 death, no matter the immediate cause, then that's answer it.

"There were 20,426 people being treated for the virus in hospitals in England on Monday, which is higher than the previous peak of about 19,000 in April."

I doubt the figures are out there for public consumption, but I would be curious about the demographic (age, socio-economic group, underlying conditions, BMI, etc etc) of the 20,426.

A good friend of mine works in a London hospital, and says while it is high and serious, most cases are still elderly people that are obese with other health issues. Might not be the same everywhere though.
