There was a television programme on the other week about attitudes to bresatfeeding. There was several viewpoints but the one I'd like to concentrate on is breastfeeding in public.

Some people were OK about it and some people thought it was disgusting, including one bloke who said "You know, it's disgusting, what with all these paedophidlias about". Yes, he did say that, the ignorant cad.

Personally, I do not think any part of the human body is disgusting or dirty, so I don't have a problem. It's not unnatural or unhygienic, and the mother is doing the best she can for the baby. What's the problem?

What do you think?

edit: though to thought

I think we should encourage our young people to breastfeed their babies, it gives them the best possible start in life, people are happy for girls to get their breasts out on the beach and mothers shouldn't have to go to the toilet to feed their babies how would we like to eat our dinner in the loo, something is very unhealthy about having a problem with breastfeeding , I think there should be special little rooms for them that are against it to hid. :D

I don't think it's disgusting.....but I have to admit, I'm a bit embarrassed by it (depending on how it is handled) I think if it's something you're not accustomed to (norm), people in general tend to stare in amazement and then get embarrassed by staring, and instead of thinking it a natural thing, (which it is) they tend to point fingers and make a fuss to make themselves feel better about it.

Maybe "norm" was wrong way to put it. I don't have children and not around "new moms" much --but I don't think it is wrong by any means :)

Some shops will let mums use their private areas to breastfeed babies.

For my part, it's o k any time any place.

What could be more natural or beautiful than a mother breast feeding her child. How can that be offensive?

BE HAPPY

Nothing wrong with it, especially in a society where you see nothing but sexualised images of breasts everywhere, people can't really be offended by seeing them used for their proper purpose.

Having said that, this programme was more about extreme breastfeeding, like one woman who still had an 8-year old (and her husband) drinking it.

I don't think people still think that way but we will see from this thread, but most feeding mothers are discreet, It never even occured to me anyone might find it "disgusting".

Yeah it was, but like I said, I'd like to concentrate on breastfeeding in public. I'd be interested to hear any opposing views.

As for the 8 year old, hmm, the Mum did say when she was old enough she would stop, and when she couldn't suck anymore that would be the natural thing. So when the little girl lost her ability to suck, she was a bit put out, but soon got over it and the next thing you see is her dressing up in adult women's clothes and using socks to stuff a bra she had put over her clothes. So she was a child, then she was thinking about being a woman, some girls do start puberty that age. They seemed to be healthy and happy, so I couldn't see a problem. As for husband though, I might try it from a glass, but I wouldn't suckle!

When our kids were young we decided that breastfeeding would be best but when it was attempted in public we were mocked and ridiculed by shopkeepers, staff and members of the public and it was very upsetting until my wife suggested that it may be better if she did it.

We went to ********** once. Where can I breastfeed? asked my wife. In the toilet came the reply. Would you eat your food in the toilet? She asked, while breastfeeding on the shopfloor.....
