Can I DIY a chewed cable?

I do not know . It is just a wire in the attic I came across that seems chewed and disconnected.

The fuse gives a big spark out in the fuse box downstairs when I replace the fuse. I am not sure if it is related to that wire or somewhere else.

Your consumer unit still has wire fuses?

If the wire has been fully chewed through, have you not noticed sockets/etc not working?

With all of the power turned off, you can put the live/neutral/earth in to connector blocks (both ends) and then replace the fuse, then see what happens.

That said, I do not understand how a rodent would be able to chew through a whole cable without being fried.

Rodent gobbles through N and E first, causing the RCD to trip. Then treats themselves to dessert by munching on the "dead" live conductor. ;)

Fair play, but the OP seems to be suggesting that his consumer unit has wired fuses (and presumably no RCD)

It is not JohnW2 asking the question - "Can I?".
You are a pedant - "can" means power, permission or possibility, all three of which apply to the OP. Asking a question does not disqualify a diyer from doing something, otherwise this site wouldn't have got off the ground.

Funnily enough this is the failure my furry friend was hitting, RCD trips as they got to the Neutral first, as it's an old 90s Wylex board it has one 100mA RCD covering the lot which wasn't terribly convenient (yes, I know, I know)

This cable actually has had some polystyrene sheets on top of it which I only twigged when they damaged it, they were able to chomp through the already slightly degraded PVC in short order.

This did not result in an RCD tripping (circuit remained energised), but there were no rodent skeletal remains in the vicinity ..

Very true. If needing to 'ask questions' about it meant that the person concerned was 'disqualified' from doing something (anything), then NONE of the countless means of 'seeking advice' would ever get off the ground.

However, as EFLI has implied, it's a question of what questions are asked (or comments made) that give some insight into the likely competence (or otherwise) of someone to undertake a particular task.

Point taken but equally the OP knows relatively little about the competence of those telling him to give up. Its a forum not an exam syllabus
