1981 spurs v wolves, exact same thing happened police opened the outer gate to relieve pressure outside caused by the antiquated turnstyles. Luckily enough they were on the ball a bit better then and closed off the tunnel, even so there were many crush injuries and a big stink between the police and sheffield wednesday with them both blaming each other.
The police then recommended that the capacity at that end be reduced, wednesday wouldn't do so, they also refused to modernise the turnstyles on cost grounds.
No more semi finals were held there after that until 1987, then forest and liverpool played there in 88. Peter Robinson complained before that game that we had been given the wrong end because we had far more fans and needed the bigger end, that fell on deaf ears. But that year an experienced copper was in charge.
What was differrent about 89 was the inexperienced fool who was in charge of safety and f*cked it up.
I've noticed a few idiots who still want to blame drunken ticketless fans turning up late for the crush despite all of the evidence to the contrary.
If I was a family member who had lost a son or daughter I would blame who I thought was responsible and say it loud and clear. I haven't heard one family member blaming the fans.

You really don't know what your talking about. Ask any fan of other clubs who went to similar games at Hillsborough in the 80's and then come back and say the same thing. My mates dad went to the Leeds vs Coventry semi final in 87 and said he spent most of the game worrying about being crushed it was that overcrowded. Packed in like sardines was a huge understatement is how he put it. Hillsborough could've happened to any club around the same time, it just happened to occur when Liverpool were playing. The state of the ground was just an accident waiting to happen. Add that to a wholly inexperienced police commander on the day and you have a terrible mix, which unfortunately lead to the death of 96 football fans.
You might think your Mr know it all but like on many other occasions your way off the mark.
You've answered your own question the POLICE opened the gate what more do you want ???? and as outside is a big open space how if the gate remained closed would "50" people get crushed outside ffs .

The police opened the gates in 89 and how many died? 96
Therefore something different must have happened.
