Differences in UK and US........

what is your understanding of what a solicitor does in the USA

here it is a "lawyer" but got some funny looks in Omaha once when i told a young lady that she looked like my solicitor back home

I read a great book about America a little while back, all about how the settlers wiped out the native american Indians .
"bury my heart at wounded knee"

then I read this

Thanks giving in a three day "thank you" celebration to the leaders of the Wampanoag Indian tribe and their families for teaching them the survival skills they needed to make it in the New World

swelec.......I knew this one, but looked it up anyway for sake of explanation....according to Webster (dictionary)....to approach with a request or plea......to urge strongly (one's cause)...to offer to have sexual relations with someone for money (of a prostitute)--hence the funny look, no doubt. lawyers can be included in this definition.

Richardp.......Thanksgiving is the one day a year, that is in celebration of living in this country.....known for extravagant spreads of food that were used in the Plymouth Rock founding (pilgrims/Indians)....americans (in general) do have the odd habit of selective memory.

Dumb question perhaps, but while we're talking about distinctions, is Wales a separate and distinct country from England, just like Ireland and Scotland?
No. Wales is not a country, it's a principality.

ooooo...dont let the taffs here you say that softus..they are very toucht about that one!!...as a englishman living here wales I naturally make the most of that situation and wind them up as much as possible about it!!!!

I refer to it as a 'county of england'..that normally doesnt the trick!!...especiallt on a day like today when the rugby is on.

MBL3c...yes im really a decorator, a tutor in building college and im just about to do some do freelance work occassionally for city and guilds (our lead body in construction training) writing exam questions...theres a few of us on here....but thats enough of my c.v..or resume...as you call them.

But beware..you use the word different to us....in the states a painter paints...a decorator is the one who picks the colours and designs the job...over here they are called interior designers...

I have also worked in the interior design market...not much though..its full of 'chancers'

As for American football...the ideal place to watch it is in a bar in the states...I have found people are only to happy to talk you through the game and chat over a beer.

I almost fell for it.

The reason I asked about the decorating....not by trade, mind you, but it's something I enjoy.....we have HGTV here (home and garden channel) and I like watching....trying to get inspiration for where I am now.

out of curiosity.....what are B&Q stores? what do the letters stand for?

B & Q is virtually the same as your own 'home depot' and 'Lowes' and it stands for Block and Quail...the names of the two people who started it off years ago with a small hardware shop.

They are the biggest DIY out let in the U.K and have virtually wiped oout all the oppostion.

The home Depot is great though.....great tool selection..unfortunatly they dont ship to the UK.

Last time we were in Florida the wife took the kids to the parks etc...I spent every chance I could get sussing out the DIY shops...

Sad or what!!???

some might say sad.....but I can relate. I'm not handy.....more of a "DIY wannabe but never will be.....but I can still dream, can't I?" kind of gal. I have friends who are very handy.....and being good sports, will try and teach me...but they usually end up doing it themselves out of exasperation.
My ex and I are still great friends....and he and his wife are very handy...ooooh, I'm rambling. Any way, I can relate.

The legal institutions in this country have a reocrd of shafting people for money...so its quite similar isnt it!! lol

I once told a friend of ours in Kissimmee to 'knock me up' (meaning tap on our door or ring the bell) when she got to our hotel in front of a big group or other Americans..

You could hears pins dropping everywhere...and our friends face was a picture!

I took a gander at some news items there and have realized this thread wasn't such a good idea....we(USA) have the same thing here as there.......but we're booger....er I mean bigger and there are more places to run to .....for them.....and us too ....on second thought. The only thing wrong with our politics is location......if Washington had been in the South way back when.......oops that wouldn't have work.....well anyway.....one of the likenesses is they like to talk and in a way I could almost feel sorry for Bush.....but I don't. He saves face by pushing a panic button when we shouldn't have gotten so "comfy" on the couch, but in the end we all pay and sad but true, are destined to repeat. :(

You mentioned Bush...just thought i'd mention that, from a Britsh perspective, he is probably to most disliked and distrusted president you have have had.

Irrespective of what hes political party is and how it compares with our over here.

I think if you took a poll over here, you would find that most agree with your perspective...most agree that he's a brown noser who is trying to save face regardless of the price that is paid. Nothing like past presidents....sad really...this is how trends start :(

Area of a Kingdom ruled by a Prince and Princess, who swear an oath of loyalty to the King and Queen. May become a Kingdom in its own right some day, or remain as a permanent Principality.

So if a Principality is somewhere ruled by a Prince, and a Kingdom is somewhere ruled by a King, what does that make the person, for example GWB, who rules a country?
