Do short jail sentences work?

maximum sentence should be 25 years, anything that requires a longer term than that should be truncated to 12 months on death row ( to allow for a single appeal ) and then death..
think of all the money you'll be saving...

the prisons should all be moved to remote locations, no more in town ones.
no visitors allowed except for birthdays and christmas.

guards on the watchtowers should be armed and allowed to shoot anyone causing harm to another inmate ( that would curtail gang violence ).

ALL crimes that don't warrant the death penalty should incur hard labour, breaking rocks in a disused quarry for example..

only thing i'd disagree with is guards should be allowed to shoot anyone after they'd caused harm to another inmate

why after? if you have vigilant guards with decent scopes,. they could quite easily see someone pull out a shank or a shiv and know that they have the intention of hurting someone with it.. maybe even a guard..

it was a flippant comment Coljack... i was suggesting, let the scum hurt each other... then shoot them..

I had the misfortune to be on a bus recently where I overheard a conversation between a couple.

The girl said to the boy "don't worry the short sentences are the ***king worst, at least with the long ones you can get proppa settled in"

So to the crims, short sentences seem to be worse, but not necessarily any more effective.

This is a straightforward cost saving measure as far as I can tell - stop sending so many people to prison and you won't need to invest in more prison buildings and it reduces running costs.

Although I'm not in favour of privatisation as it only ever seems to make services worse or more expensive maybe a few private prisons would be an interesting pilot. If they are anything like private personal care the prisoners will reform themselves to get out and have some decent food and accommodation!

Privately managed prisons were introduced to the UK in the 1990s.

Considering that you live in the Philippines - what are you fretting about?

Been in the nick a few times, stealing to support a family, i eventually got work on the railway for 6 yrs, never have we all at home been happier than when i worked and had a full time job. Now that's gone, the savings have , gone, back to pinchy, pinchy.

 People need work, pretty fulkin simple.

Edit; sorry ,no, short term sentences do not work, UNLESS its a boot camp, i went to DC, and it stopped me for 2 yrs, but, sadly, life got better after that, in prisons, like to add, my last sentence was in 87' So life seems better inside? believe me it's not!

What's the missus up too?

Having read this I swayed between outrage and a feeling of sympathy for your plight. The fact that you are quite happy to potentially make my children unhappy and feel unsafe in their own home for your own kith and kin's survival (such is the nature of the aftermath of burglary) means that I can never accept yours as an acceptable nor valid position.

Why should I be prepared to be inconvenienced by your selfish actions?

In short, a rationalised feeling of outrage wins the day.
